Cage's character's ticks bothered and annoyed my spouse to the point of not enjoying the movie. I did not enjoy the twists and turns. But in the end I would say I enjoyed the movie. Trying not to give anything away makes it hard to write a decent review. But I guess the bottom line is if you like it you like it, and if you don't you don't! haha

It’s hard to tell someone why this movie is so good without giving away too much... Matchstick Men isn’t quite a con movie, it’s more like a movie about con men. Don’t expect any grandiose and overblown cons like in Ocean’s Eleven. Here, the con is just a day job; it’s what these people do to make a living; it’s secondary to the actual story being told…or so you’re lead to believe.The fun thing about con artist movies is that you get to be taken along with a crew as they mastermind and orchestrate some elaborate string of deception that ultimately results in a big payday. Most of us wish we could pull something like that off, but in reality, we’re not con men, we’re just marks -- which is why I love these types of movies, they’re pure wish fulfillment.However, in a lot of recent con movies, the viewers are no longer being allowed to follow the exploits of the con artists, they’re merely being shown an incomplete series of events -- just so the filmmakers can have a big reveal at the end and say, “We got you!” Instead of being part of the crew, the viewer is now just another mark. Because the characters are actually deceiving the viewer, it makes them unsympathetic, and in the end, you don’t really care about what happens to them. You watch the movie not for fun, but to see if you can figure out the con within the con. It undermines the entire point of going to see a con movie.That’s why Matchstick Men is so cool. Yes, several cons do take place during the course of the movie, but the story is really about the characters, not that ultimate big payday. Then, when the big reveal comes at the end of the movie, you actually share in the character’s emotional plight rather than hating him. It’s perfectly orchestrated and totally logical. And that’s why a truly great con works, because it gets you so caught up in emotion that you forget to think -- not by deleting scenes and holding back pieces of the story.

I bought this to replace the one I lost. I really enjoyed this movie. Surprise ending.

This is one film I think is greatly underrated. Nicholas cage plays Roy- a conman who lives alone and fears the outside world in just about every way, including having a life. He finds out that he has a 14-year-old daughter and decides to meet her. Their bond brings him out of his reclusive ways to a point and Roy discovers a lot of things bout himself and his new little family. Sam Rockwell plays his wise ass, but sympathetic partner, Frank.I really like the feel of this film. It's soundtrack features Sinatra and other smooth tunes that I enjoyed a lot. This is not a pulse-pounder or adrenaline junkie film, but there are a few tense moments. It's more about Roy's own conscience driving him to be a better man, although he definitely needs help in getting there.I really enjoy this film more and more every time I watch it. If you're a fan of crime movies and like a comedic twist to the story along with good character development, this film is definitely for you. Included is a nice little "making of" featurette.

I love everything about this movie. Nicolas Cage is one of my favorites and he’s funny and endearing as ever in this! All the characters are engaging and the acting is just marvelous. Matchstick Men has a unique storyline with twists and turns, suspense and a few surprises towards the end! I give it two 👍👍

Movies about con-men are difficult to pull off. The best ones, in my opinion, are The Sting, Reservoir Dogs, Catch Me If You Can, Spanish Prisoner (Steve Martin is exceptional), and yet another Steve Martin flick, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Add to this the wonderful Matchstick Men. It is by far one of Nick Cage's best roles. He plays Roy Waller, a con-man with severe OCD, which, in and of itself, is a peculiar twist. Roy, along with his partner, Frank, played by the always reliable Sam Rockwell, is a career criminal, who expertly pulls off reasonably safe cons, extorting thousands from unsuspecting targets.Then along comes not only Roy's long lost daughter (Alison Lohman should have been nominated for her portrayal as the coy, callow, Angela), but the chance for one hell of a big time con.I won't give away details, but suffice it to say, nothing is as it seems. With a tight script, top notch acting, and agile directing by Ridley Scott, Matchstick Men is a delight.

There's charm and humor in this enjoyable tale of two con men. The very neurotic older one is advised by his shrink to get in touch with the 14-year old daughter he has never seen and is not sure exists. The result is a total disruption of the lives of the two successful criminals. Cage, Rockwell and Lohman deliver their characters convincingly, but somehow they never quite affected me enough to really care about them. It's a problem I have with some of Scott's films – they are great in every respect except that his characters can be rather cold. (Try caring which of the protagonists of the visually brilliant "The Duelists" will come out on top.) Still, it's fast and fun which may be enough for most.

Nach den drei Mammutprojekten "Gladiator", "Hannibal" und "Black Hawk Down" und dem bevorstehenden "Königreich der Himmel" überraschte Workaholic und Regielegende Ridley Scott 2003 mit einer für ihn höchst ungewöhnlichen, kleinen und charakterbezogenen Gaunerkomödie, die wirklich viel Spaß macht und unbeschwerte Unterhaltung liefert.Der Film handelt von Roy Waller (Nicolas Cage), einem raffinierten Trickbetrüger, der an krankhaften Zwangsneurosen leidet und daher außer seinem exzentrischen Geschäftspartner Frank Mercer (Sam Rockwell) praktisch keine menschlichen Kontakte hat und in seinem klinisch reinen, durchgestylten Haus vor sich hinlebt. Doch Roys pedantisch geordneter Lebensalltag wird gründlich ins Wanken gebracht, als er erfährt, dass er eine 14-jährige Tochter hat. Roys Routine bekommt einen Knicks und nach anfänglicher Panik gewöhnt er sich an seine neue Verantwortung und beginnt langsam wieder ein wenig zu leben, während die beiden eine ungewöhnliche Vater-Tochter-Beziehung aufbauen.Nicolas Cage ist fantastisch in seiner Rolle und liefert hier nach "Leaving Las Vegas", "Adaption", "Arizona Junior" und "Wild at Heart" eine seiner besten Rollen. Cage geht hier voll auf, er ist immer dann am besten, wenn es um neurotische und exzentrische Parts geht, die er mit einer oft beispiellosen Skurilität und Verrücktheit füllt. Er ist hier einfach oft urkomisch, die vielen kleinen irritierenden Eigenarten, die er einbaut, sorgen für viele Lacher und sind sehr inspiriert und ergeben eine durchweg erfrischende Performance. Jedoch ist er nicht albern und geht seine Figur nie als Karikatur an, sondern gibt eine absolut menschliche und ausgewogene Darstellung, die oft sogar berührt und durchaus Oscar-würdig ist.Alison Lohman spielt Roys Tochter Angela ebenfalls herausragend. Ihre Meisterleistung ist es, trotz ihres damaligen Alters von 22 Jahren als 14-jährige glaubwürdig rüberzukommen. Die Chemie zwischen Lohman und Cage ist perfekt und ergibt viele witzige, aber auch durchaus berührende Momente, die stets von großer Menschlichkeit geprägt sind. Der großartige Sam Rockwell ist dann noch die Krönung des kleinen Ensembles, der ebenfalls wie schon in Filmen wie "Geständnisse - Confessions of a Dangerous Mind", "Choke" oder "Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis" viele kuriose, exzentrische und amüsante Eigenarten zur Rolle mitbringt, die das komplette Gegenteil zu Roys darstellt.Scott überrascht mit "Tricks", da er dieses Mal visuell sehr zurückhaltend vorgeht, aber dafür den Darstellern viel Platz gibt, um eine feine Charakterstudie zu kreieren, die auch nie klischeehaft wirkt. Es handelt sich hier schlicht um tolle, luftige Unterhaltung, die durch den swingigen Easy Listening Soundtrack von Hans Zimmer und Stücken wie "Summerwind" oder "This Town" von Frank Sinatra u.v.a verfeinert wird. Ein kleiner Juwel, der eine absolute Empfehlung wert ist.

Der Film ist bis zum Ende etwas strange und wird sicherlich nicht jedem gefallen,vom Titel "Tricks" sollte man sich nicht verleiten lassen: Es geht hier nicht wie z.B. bei Oceans 11/12/13 um geniale Trickbetrügerein am laufenden Band, sondern mehr um einen Vater der seine Tochter wiederfindet - am Ende wir der Film aufgelöst, ich will nicht zu viel verraten aber das Ende ist genial, sowas habe ich lange nicht mehr gesehen - erst am Ende versteht man, warum der Name Tricks dann doch wie die Faust aufs Auge passt!!Fazit: Kaufen!

Ricco anche di contenuti speciali. Spedizione non velocissima ma puntuale nella data prevista. Venditore affidabile, lo consiglio!!

Auch wenn man manche Sachen erst im Laufe des Films versteht (Stichwort: Pygmäen), so glänzt Nicholas Cage durch schauspielerische Höchstleistung und obwohl er einen umwerfend guten Trickbetrüger spielt, fühlt man doch mit ihm, als er auch mal aufs Kreuz gelegt wird. Und das auf eine Weise, mit der man wirklich nicht rechnet.Sehr überraschender Film mit sehr charmanten Darstellern und einer wirklich schönen, glaubhaften Erzählweise.Sehenswert. Unbedingt.
