The film's starting was in a quite light hippy style, at least I felt like this, and knowing not much about what is coming was shocked by an expected but still unexpected event...I loved that it was made from the point of child's view, the text was given by a teen girl and all events are about her thoughts and feelings.The film based on a true story and made by the same person. So, nothing can be added or removed.

Probably the most realistic rape scene I've ever seen. Your heart was racing and you felt the panic, pain and sadness all at once... then again when she breaks down after her baseball game, so very real.I think people that have been through this will be able to relate. I've noticed some comments saying the scene wasn't "big enough" or "real enough", I disagree. I've never felt so connected to such a horrible attack, it was how it is, quick, intrusive, terrifying, and over in an instant. Well done to the actress and the actual attacker, as their acting was amazing, I actually felt like I was witnessing a real attack which was so sad and scary as a viewer :(The rest of the movie I loved, great acting, the sisters were so believable, their characters were funny and edgy. As were many of the adult actors. The only reason I knocked it down a star is due to feeling like the ending wasn't that great, I get it, but it would have been good to get a different feel, not sure what but it didn't seem fitting.All in all, good movie.

Did not know what to expect when I picked this and then was so positively surprised. Very strong and impressive acting! Got really sucked into the story, wanted to know more about each character, didn't want it to end. Just brilliant!

Only watchable once you've consumed a 12 pack or 3 bottles of wine.

The thing is this happens. It's raw and believable. Thought the acting was great, even the mother. I chuckled that a 1970s set film was termed period drama; guess I am old. I loved this. Fascinating.

The film set and design captured an authentic portrayal of life in the 70's under tough conditions. Worth a watch despite the feeling of unfinished-ness at the end.

Tragic true life story told through the eyes of the eldest of three daughters living with their drug fuelled mother who had lots of different men in the house along with booze, sex and beatings. Brilliant acting by the daughters who tried to spend as much time as they could away from the house. Although the girls deserved to have a mother who cared for them I couldnt help but think the mother missed out on her amazing daughters. Sad life for these three beautiful, funny and truly adorable children.

Beware of false advertising. I pre-ordered the DVD because the ad stated that this version of the film (formerly titled The Poker House) was NC-17 with a running time of 96 minutes, which would be 3 minutes longer than the R-rated U.S. release. It's actually 89 minutes and on the back of the DVD case it says that the film is safe for viewers 15 years and older. For those thinking about buying this, this film is NOT 96 minutes and it is NOT NC-17. But for those who haven't seen this yet, this is actually pretty good, just don't buy this version.
