## Description

'A triumph of execution ... one of the best narratives of the "double life" of a Victorian gentleman' Peter Ackroyd Oscar Wilde's alluring novel of decadence and sin was a succès de scandale on publication. It follows Dorian Gray who, enthralled by his own exquisite portrait, exchanges his soul for eternal youth and beauty. Influenced by his friend Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life, indulging his desires in secret while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite society. Only his portrait bears the traces of his depravity. This definitive edition includes a selection of contemporary reviews condemning the novel's immorality. Edited with an Introduction and notes by ROBERT MIGHALL

Review: Regret not reading it sooner. - Everyone loves the idea of staying beautiful forever—until they realise what they’d look like if their soul were the one doing the ageing. Pros: Still the sharpest mirror anyone’s held up to vanity. Wilde writes like he’s flirting with you and insulting you at the same time. It’s dazzlingly quotable—every line sounds like it was made to outlive the speaker. You can read it as philosophy, satire, or horror, and it holds up as all three. Cons (spoken with a grin): You might end up liking Lord Henry more than you should; that’s part of the trap. For all its talk of pleasure, the book is almost Puritan underneath—Wilde can’t help scolding the sin he’s dressed up so beautifully. The moral turn comes quick; by the end you feel Wilde closing the door he spent the whole book opening. Still, it’s the rare book that flatters you while warning you. Everyone wants to be Dorian at the start; no one admits they already are by the end.
Review: Timeless and Captivating - Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray is a brilliant classic that explores beauty, morality, and desire. The Penguin Classics edition is well‑presented, with clear text and helpful notes, making it easy to enjoy and understand. A powerful story that remains thought‑provoking and unforgettable.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Interesting but a little morbid
*by J***E on 23 November 2024*

An interesting classic. It had a good tale and interesting moral dilemmas. Quite dark and morbid so don’t read if you want to feel warm and happy inside! I prefer monte cristo- still my favourite moral tale.
