Penn International VI Conventional Fishing Reels (All Models & Sizes)

If you are looking for a large reel to pull in the sharks here it is. There is an adjustable screw on the side for the drag to ensure you do not apply too much drag and then bust your line. 80 lb line needs max 40 lbs drag. 20 lb line needs 10 lb drag. You guys out there trying to regear your reels to have a higher drag are wasting your money. Just use the correct amount of drag based on the line size and line size should equal the type of fish your catching. I caught a 900 lb Mako Shark on a 80 lb line with a steel leader.

I have been using my Penn 130 for 2 years now. Have caught everything from Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Yellow Fin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna, Ono (Wahoo for the people stateside), and a few Sailfish. Never had an issue. Use it about every weekend.

This reel is AWESOME! It is tough and obviously well made. It also has the gold color (bling) that is indicative of this brand, and tells everyone you mean business. I ordered this reel for land-based shark fishing. So while I know little about trolling applications (which most of you reading this review are wondering about) my review may not cover some of the items you are looking for. The reel has 2 gears. Kick it into low (granny gear) to make a little headway on those larger species that you'll fight for over an hour, this was the biggest selling point to me. The placement of the gear change button is convenient (end of spindle at articulation point of handle) and large enough to be able to hit it quickly and precisely. One of the main upgrades this reel has is a ratchet style drag, versus a disc style drag. The drag is smooth and loud. The sound of the ratchet gets me pumped! The aluminum body is somewhat anti corrosive and probably limits some of the weight. Finally...Line Capacity. There will be nearly three-quarters of a mile of braid and mono on this bad boy! I can't even imagine how big the 80 is! The only 2 things that I would be wary of. First, I think the reel is very heavy, I know it is probably indicative of its quality, and most people will keep it on their boat, not tote it out to the beach with a kayak, and tons of gear and bait. Second, C'mon Penn! You made the gear release button out of Plastic? Really? Anyway, Cant wait to put this bad boy to use!

Truly, one of the finest reels that I’ve ever put my hands on. I absolutely love the extended comfort, and enhanced interactions that the long grip provides. Drag control is ultra fine, and highly effective throughout its broad range. Adjustable strike zone is a cool, welcome feature, though I’ve yet to modify where mine came set. The gear ratios are both quite easy to toggle between with a convenient mash of the palm. It’s difficult to put down the Penn International VI series reels. They’re beyond beautiful. Silver is an available option for this batch, as well. This reel is such a pleasure to use. It comforts me. I love it.

I love the fact that Penn is still made in the USA, right in Philadelphia PA. The new 70 VIS 2 speed reel feels lighter and I really like the new handle and the fact you can switch speeds without taking your hand off the handle. You can push the button in with your index finger then release it by pressing the tab with your thumb. A nice feature. The drag has been improved and moved to the right side of the reel. The adjustable strike stop is also a nice little added feature that makes setting the drag to the strike position something you can just do without thinking about it. Not an inexpensive reel but well worth the money for the avid sportsman and a must for tournament fishermen. Well done Penn!

Penn has a reputation as being the best quality reels on the market. This reel just might exceed it's predecessors in quality. The quality of this reel is evident as soon as you take it out of the box. Cranking the reel is smooth and the necessary controls are easy to access without looking. The two speed retrieval, drag, and strike stop are all intuitively placed and easy to operate. The crank handle feels good and fits my have perfectly. The materials used in it's manufacture are all resistant to salt water so that it should last just about forever. This is a big reel intended for bog game saltwater fishing. It just might be perfect, in my opinion!

Use Internationals for fishing big YFT and BFT. Loaded with 130 JB hollow spectra, and short 15' top shots of flouro. I mostly use 30W, 50, and 50W reels. All my reels are 28-35 years old, but have been upgraded multiple times over the years by Cal. Still work like a charm on big fish, and tough as nails.
