Is the lid filter part plastic?

The top lid is plastic. The problem is the screw in section at the bottom, where you attach the filters. They snap easily making it unusable. Having bought 2 of them in three months, I bought a stainless steel cafetiere.

Aware this is meant to be for coffee but, could you use this to strain the pips from a smoothie?

The filter is too fine for a thick drink like a smoothie and would block up quickly.

Can it be used for cold brew?

You can but in real terms it is not a dedicated cold brew device grind coarse

Is this microwave safe?

I have used mine to heat milk in the microwave, without the plunger in place. Once warm I use the plunger to froth the milk! Yummy!
