(We had five sons over 17 years. I’ve read many!) Robyn doesn’t line up solutions for every age and parenting challenge (toddlers, teens, toileting, or tantrums) — it’s not that kind of parenting book. Instead, she uses metaphor to help us understand the neuroscience behind challenging behaviors such as why sometimes a child may respond to verbal directions while at other times our most kindly logical explanations result in meltdowns or shutdowns. She doesn’t just leave us with the science, she also gives practical tips, but again they are rooted in understanding kids’ brains (and our own). This book also feels like a hug. Robyn writes with such deep compassion for both children and their parents or caregivers that you can almost tangibly feel her belief in you and your kiddo through the pages.
