It is more like an oil color pigment that can be cut with linseed oil and cleaned up with a suitable solvent such as mineral spirits. It it used for determining the clearance between close fitting parts and to determine the flatness of metal parts by rolling it on a flat surface and then placing the part to be checked for flatness by laying it on the flat surface. It is moved over the surface and then picked up and inspected. Blue spots on the part indicated high spots that need to be scraped or filed away. This process is repeated as many times as needed until the part is uniformly covered with an even coating of blue patches. **Q: Could this be used for stock inletting?** A: This is a non drying marking compound used for checking contact between mating surfaces. It could be used for inletting on non porous stocks but it would soak into wood as it is oil based. **Q: Can I use this product on wood** A: This product is used mostly for showing points of contact between metal surfaces for final fitting and machining. It will stain anything it touches blue, but for wood finishing, I would recommend a prussian blue paint as this is non drying. **Q: Does this show up well when applied to a black surface?** A: It does show but not that well. Way better than trying to make it yourself and a little go's a long way. And you can use it on gears and bearings to check your shims.
