## Overview

## Description

From Alice Walker, author of the Pulitzer Prize– and National Book Award–winner The Color Purple, comes Meridian, "a classic novel of both feminism and the Civil Rights movement" ( Ms .). Meridian Hill is a young woman at an Atlanta college attempting to find her place in the 1960s revolution for racial and social equality. She discovers the limits beyond which she will not go for the cause, but despite her decision not to follow the path of some of her peers, she makes significant sacrifices in order to further her beliefs. Working in a campaign to register African American voters, Meridian cares broadly and deeply for the people she visits, and, while her coworkers quit and move to comfortable homes, she continues to work in the deep South despite a paralyzing illness. Meridian's nonviolent methods, though seemingly less radical than the methods of others, prove to be an effective means of furthering her beliefs. "A glowing affirmation of the possibility...of love and forgiveness—between men and women, black and white."— Baltimore Sun

Review: I thought I didn't like this book when I started reading - I thought I didn't like this book when I started reading. I put it away for a bit and went on to something else but then the book started "calling" to me so I took it out again. This time I couldn't put it down and even went back and re-read certain parts to make sure I understood what the book was saying. I rate this book with some of the finest books I have ever read and I have always been an avid reader, so many, many fine books have gone through my hands and into my mind. I found I cared deeply for the heroine even though I didn't know her, or anyone like her, our lives had no similarity at all. She an American black woman and me a Scottish white woman had no knowledge of each others lives at all. I came to America just after the "Greensboro sit-in" and was stunned to find out that there was this terrible division of white and black people and I started to read their stories. Do not miss this book, it truly speaks of courage and love and compassion.
Review: Well Written But Dark and Sometimes Depressing - Meridian is the type of book that I have to be in the mood to read. It is often dark and depressing especially when some characters, particularly Meridian, seem to throw away their opportunities or act rather foolishly, so if you want to read a light or happy novel, this isn't for you. If you like to read books that dwell on personality, cultural influences during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the choices people make, you may enjoy it. The book is very well written. In addition to racial themes, sexism and religion play large roles in the book. One thing that bothered me was that all the men were portrayed rather negatively. They did not treat women well. Women all seemed nicer.

### ⭐⭐⭐ fictional snapshot of the equal rights movement through the eyes of Meridian
*by K***T on October 29, 2020*

The story of Meridian and her comrades is somewhat dark and disturbing, though Alice Walker is a brilliant writer. There is much about sex and sexuality, sometimes disturbing.
