Meridian: A Classic Novel of Civil Rights Activism and Feminism in the 1960s American South

I thought I didn't like this book when I started reading. I put it away for a bit and went on to something else but then the book started "calling" to me so I took it out again. This time I couldn't put it down and even went back and re-read certain parts to make sure I understood what the book was saying. I rate this book with some of the finest books I have ever read and I have always been an avid reader, so many, many fine books have gone through my hands and into my mind. I found I cared deeply for the heroine even though I didn't know her, or anyone like her, our lives had no similarity at all. She an American black woman and me a Scottish white woman had no knowledge of each others lives at all. I came to America just after the "Greensboro sit-in" and was stunned to find out that there was this terrible division of white and black people and I started to read their stories. Do not miss this book, it truly speaks of courage and love and compassion.

Meridian is the type of book that I have to be in the mood to read. It is often dark and depressing especially when some characters, particularly Meridian, seem to throw away their opportunities or act rather foolishly, so if you want to read a light or happy novel, this isn't for you. If you like to read books that dwell on personality, cultural influences during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the choices people make, you may enjoy it. The book is very well written. In addition to racial themes, sexism and religion play large roles in the book. One thing that bothered me was that all the men were portrayed rather negatively. They did not treat women well. Women all seemed nicer.

The story of Meridian and her comrades is somewhat dark and disturbing, though Alice Walker is a brilliant writer. There is much about sex and sexuality, sometimes disturbing.

Hard to read at times, because of its subject matter, but always lyrical and moving. Wonderful examination of the voter registration drive in the South and the movement(s) that backed it, as well as the hypocrisy of the black college ( like Invisible Man), and the internecine battles of the movement and inter- racial dynamics both external to and within that movrment. Ultimately, though, the story of one resilient woman whose journey teaches her a wisdom that transcends ideology.

This book exceeded my expectations. The way in which is was craft just took it to another level. I loved the color purple BUT THIS is beyond words. They way the reader is drawn into and becomes invested in each main character proves how remarkable a writer Alice Walker truly is.

I was assigned to read this for my English class which made me very neutral in the beginning. Once I started reading I could not stop. Some very important topics of race, classism, and sexism were brought up: issues we still struggle with in 2019. It was also a self reflection of the main character self which can be relatable when it comes to not conforming with society’s norms. Great read and definitely recommended.

Alice Walker is one of America's most important writers. She delves into the psyche of characters she creates in the most poetic and meaningful ways. In doing so, she invites us to look for the poetry within ourselves. Brava! In all respects.

The book was an interesting look at the life of a black woman involved in the civil rights movement of the 1960's. The reason I rated it three stars was I was never sure where in her life time I was reading about it or exactly when in history it was.

This is by far Alice Walker’s best novel. The characters are complex and never mere victims. A fine novel about people involved in the Civil Rights actions in the 1960s.
