You have to finalize the disc and it will play in any DVD player. **Q: does this play vcr tapes as well as dvds** A: Not only does it play VCR tapes but it up-converts them and, different than most combo boxes, all through a single HDMI cable so no changing inputs to watch DVDs and VCR tapes. It also can copy them to DVD if you prefer moving them to that more permanent media for posterity. TV may now be turned off, but VCR must remain on, as well as Funai on with timer function set. This works well if you have a spare tv, because you can only watch and record one channel at a time. Still looking for a device called "external tuner" as described in the owners manual.
