French-Canadian psychological thriller, adapted by horror writer Patrick Senecal from his own novel. Claude Legault stars as Bruno Hamel, a 30-something surgeon whose young daughter Jasmine (Rose-Marie Coallier) is kidnapped, brutally raped and murdered. When the police arrest the killer (Martin Dubreuil), Bruno abducts him from police custody and informs the police of his elaborate and gruesome plan for revenge, which involves torturing the man for seven days before finally executing him on the seventh day. Remy Girard co-stars as Herve Mercure, the police officer responsible for stopping Bruno. Review: Not just another horror flick - This film was described as being similar to the Saw movies, which I have watched and enjoyed as excellent horror movies. 7 Days is a film I feel would be more appropriate to be compared to "I Spit On Your Grave". This is a film telling the story of a couple whose 8 year old daughter is brutally raped, murdered and left in the bushes to be found by her father. The actors who play the parents, and the police detective could not have played these roles any better. The father manages to abduct the man proved by DNA to have committed this crime. He intends to torture him for 7 days, then kill him on his daughter's 9th birthday before giving himself up. As the 7 days progress, you see him trying to relieve his own incredible pain and suffering onto his "victim" using various methods, yet not for a second did I feel remotely sorry for this man being tortured. I am not a sadistic person, but the acting performance by this man playing a grieving father was so that you could almost feel his grief and see that it was he that was being tortured more than his victim. Personally I found this father's grief harder to bear than anything he was doing to that man who caused it yet you see the father realise that inflicting pain on this paedophile is not helping to relieve his own suffering. The detective who is searching for him lost his own wife to a murderer who is now in jail, and you see him fighting his own feelings of inadequacy while he still grieves his wife. He feels deeply for this father's suffering as he knows that there could be no deeper grief than to have lost a child in this way. This is NOT a cheap video nasty, it is a real story that will leave you asking yourself a lot of questions afterwards. Well worth watching, and not as gory as Saw! Not one for the hardcore gore hound, but...
I don't normally feel the need to write reviews on items I buy, but this is an exception because I believe it is a film that can quite easily be misunderstood, as evidenced by another reviewers take. The box doesn't help itself with the Saw comparison. I personally can't abide what Saw has become, the first one was a bit of a watershed for the 'torture porn' sub genre (I do hate that name) and a landmark horror of the noughties, but it soon descended into absolute farce, not scary, not clever, and as it limped to into it's sixth instalment, I would go far as to say totally laughable. Anyway, back to 7 days. This film is a bleak, unsettling documentary of one man's quest for revenge on the rapist and murderer of his 8 year old daughter. He manages to kidnap him from police custody and takes him to a deserted cabin in the middle of nowhere where he plans to torture him to death over the following 7 days. However he is a doctor, and although this comes in handy when exacting his revenge on his daughters killer, he was also a compassionate and gentle person before he lost his daughter, and his actions coupled with the grief of losing his only child start to take there toll on his sanity... There are scenes of brutality but they are sparse, which hieghtens their impact when the do happen. The violence is realistic and nasty, but overall the movie is more focused on the doctors descent into depression. It is light on dialogue and music, preferring to convey the despair and depression through silence and a washed out colour palette. It is a far more human film than the Saw comparison gives it credit for, and the real horror fans who appreciate more than vivisectionist splatter will find plenty to immerse themselves in here. A sterling effort and a quite haunting film in it's own right. Recommended.

Not for those who cant read.
British people, I had to laugh when I read the review from the guy who complained that this movie had "subtitals" - oh the irony. Unable to grasp his own language but rants about someone else's. For anyone who claims they like horror and doesn't know that France has been holding the horror crown for years, well....welcome to the show - you're very late. True, there have been a few decent British horror flicks (Mum and Dad for example) but America has been churning out weak garbage (mostly) now for ages. It's sad when The Conjuring is being hailed as "the scariest film of the year" I've had a bigger fright spilling tea on myself. 7 Days is excellent, simple as that. Grim, brutal, wonderful. And if you subtitle haters would just try reading a bit you might realize what you've been missing. Either that, or just go back to your teens in the woods chased by a man in a mask flicks. Yawnnn. Subtitals... I'm still laughing.

How would you react if your child was in the 1st or 2nd grade and was murdered? With a big belly laugh seconds before you give a press conference to say how sad you are and to promote a donation page on facebook? When asked if this would disrupt your Christmas would you answer yes and no? Would you be smiling and laughing while being interviewed on television just days after your child was murdered saying you are happy your child is with Jesus? Would you forgive the person who murdered your child the very next day on national television? After seeing your 7 or 8 year old child's dead, beaten body do you think the coroner would make 10 to 15 jokes at a national press conference? If he did, would that be OK with you? Would you decide to not attend your murdered child's funeral because you wanted to visit relatives in Florida and leave your wife to face the funeral alone? If you believe in fairy tales I highly recommend for you to not watch this movie. It will skew your whole perspective of reality. 7 Days is a realistic movie about how someone might respond if their 8 year old daughter was raped and murdered by a heartless creep. The lives of the Hamels are completely turned upside down. No laughs and smiles here. Notice how Sylvie (Jasmine's mother played by Fanny Mallette - incredible performance!) goes from a normal happy person to distraught within seconds of the news of her daughter's disapperance and then grief striken, withdrawn and depressed at the realization of her daughter's death. See Sylvie completely break down with hysterical, uncontrolable tears while her husband Bruno (played by Claude Legault - absolutely one of the best actors I have ever seen in a movie) tries to console her. 7 Days is a superbly acted, well written and well directed movie that is very disturbing and realistic. There is no music soundtrack - not one note - which I think adds to the realism of the film. Without giving too much away, this is a revenge film (Bruno is a doctor!) but the film goes far deeper than just that. It is a psychological study on the ways violence affects different people, such as the detective (great performance by Remy Girard), and the possible ramifications of vengence. Anthony (the creepy murderer - magnificent performance by Martin Dubreuil) is no 90 pound weakling carrying 50 pounds of guns and ammunition through a hole 2 feet by 2 feet in a bullet proof window. Oh no, Anthony is a sociopath bully with absolutely no feelings towards his victims or their family members. This movie might be a little bit too realistic for people who believe everything they see on the news. I highly recommend this movie. Really, really well done. Not for the squeamish. Also, this movie is in French with English subtitles so you will have to pay attention while you watch. The first time I saw this movie, I watched the movie without subtitles. I couldn't understand a word of what they were saying and I still thought it was great. When I see the mother of an allegedly murdered 6 year old girl on national television joking about how her daughter used to make liver lips in the window of the school bus and then break out in uproarious laughter just days after her daughter was allegedly killed, questions I would want to ask the mother are: 1. Are you in need of psychiatric care? 2. Is your daughter really dead? 3. Did you ever really have a daughter? Next time the people who make up stories for the news should consult the director of this film Daniel Grou for a few pointers on how to make them more realistic.

For every parent this is a nightmare loosing your child to murder an most of all devastatingly rape, there must be this chilling effect in your body that can’t be explain, when I lost my sister years ago, as soon as I found out it was this stun feeling of guilt that I wasn't there to stop it like you always this you should, but there is this hatred of doing what this father has done to this piece of trash that perpetrated this crime, of a pure innocent little soul that don’t know heads from tales where bad minds comes from, 7 is a very slow burn to your brain, it’s like a moving Still picture perfect scene after scene, I will tell you if you were to EVER take the chance to see this see it with caution, it is very very Graphic, I can’t believe they show the scene of the little in that state, man that was hard to consume, but last resort for his outcome was what really, nothing that could make him forget. What Can You Actually Learn From This??
