As far as I know you can't set the fraction to round up to a larger fraction. I would be interested to know if anyone has been able to set it to say...1/8 or 1/4" increments. You just point at a spot far away from you and then turn the laser to a point perpendicular to you and voila. I tested this on a credenza and the measure came out exactly the same as a standard tape measure. The history feature is nice to save your measurements and I love that this is USB-C for standard charging (no replaceable batteries to worry about!).
