It should answer when you pick up the phone like elderly folks are used to the same way it worked the last 80 years. On this one you have to hit a button to get it to turn on.My old Panasonic KX-TG2357B home phone is just as loud as this expensive phone and is clearer.The "Voice enhancer" sounds better.The batteries in my old phone from 14 years ago also lasts longer between charges, like a week.This new one runs down from a full charge in 3 -4 days while sitting idle.This phone beeps loudly while using the buttons, and that BEEP is much louder than the audio from the handset.The tone control is not tone in the traditional sense.Its 3 digital presets called 1,2 3.The book explains what they are but it doesn't sound like what it says:It says1 - Flat frequency response: best for hearing aid users;2 - High frequency emphasis: best used to hear high frequencysounds;3 - MBC (Multi-Band Compression)It sounds more like, normal, extra mid-bass or extra treble with the voice and midrange removed.We used it on normal (1) since the other settings are harder to hear with, especially the shrill treble setting.The boost function was not useful since it seems to add more distortion to the signal than actual clear audio.Some folks have no idea what 2 large buttons labeled A and B might be used for on a telephone.Like having a car that says A B C D on the dash,, what's AB?The ! button also is not intuitive.Press the ! button!The "Silent" button on the base unit is prominent and gets pushed, so no ringer.The ringer OFF button on the handset should also be less prominent so it doesn't get turned off accidentally.Elderly probably won't know what an RD/P button does, but that's how it's labeled.5 buttons that affects the sound on the handset to turn it on/off/up /down/boost can be confusing, such as havingBoost to turn that on, and a volume and tone control on the side.Talk to turn on, Speaker to turn that on ....or again for off, but then it's back to just On,, without the speaker, maybe.And the Talk button to turn it ON is also the OFF button.Try explaining that to a 90 year old.Press talk to turn it on."How do I turn it off?" Press talk for that too.So On is talk, and off is also talk?I guess you had to be there to appreciate how it goes."Yes, there's 4 more buttons plus AB and RD/P. well just skip those."No, that one is the speakerphone button, you turn the phone around backwards to use it.Just turn it around. That speaker is on the back.Turn the phone around backwards.Yes, backwards,No ...the other way.Really....you Listen to the back of the phone.Yes, I know... I'm serious.Just turn it around.wait.... wait a sec....No, the other way.Well... .ok, that's right.... but now you hit "Talk" so it hung up the speakerphone.Yes, that same button also turns the phone On, or Off,, depending if it was On or Off before. or not.got it?The dial tone starts out loud for the 1st 1/4 second when turning it on, then it turns itself down automatically for the remainder of the call.
