Is the size of the needle engraved or just painted on?

THe size of the needle is engraved on each needle.

Are these light as pictured or dark? I ask becuase I've found dark needles make it harder for me with dark yarns.

Mine looked about the same as the picture, sort of a mixed bag. I have noticed that some of them have lightened with use. Also, my first use was on white yarn, some color rubbed off on the first few rows. It washed out, but you might be careful with higher end yarns. Wiping down unused needles with rubbing alcohol seems to help.
