Question 1

What are the dimensions of the base? Need to know this in order to check my workbench will take it. thx.

It has a 3 point fixing. 2 bolts at the front and 1 at the rear. Overall the base is approx. 170mm front to back and 140mm width. It also has the 2 wing nuts for adjusting the angle of rotation. If these are in the right angled position from the vice the overall width of the vice is 200mm. The total depth from the front of the handle to the rear of the centre block (closed position) is 320mm. Hope this helps. It is also a really good vice in my opinion.

What is the difference between the same 100mm light-duty vice and this 100mm heavy-duty vice?

The ligth duty much less robust construction - compare weights. Light version does not have anything like the compression power of H-duty and I don't think it has anvil.  I looked L-duty originally but didn't think it was anything like man-enough.

Question 3

My husband wants a workbench and vice for xmas for general diy at home (he's retired).   is this one ok or should i get a 6" one? help!

I have this vice and, in my opinion, it's perfect for DIY. Clearly, if your husband goes in for heavier engineering projects at home he'd probably prefer a larger one but for the usual home jobs, this is an excellent choice. The fact that it swivels is an added bonus and means that there are very few jobs he won't be able to tackle. I've used mine for all the jobs associated with ripping out a shower room and a bathroom and putting them back together again and it has been more than "man enough". Any bigger and it could get in his way. Of greater importance is the stability of the workbench you're going to buy him to bolt it to. I hope he enjoys his gift. What a nice wife.

Question 4

What size bolts are needed to fix this vice to a work bench?

The fixing holes are oversized so you would not get a bolt big enough so whichever bolt or coach screw you use, you will need a washer.
