Excellent! I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about tackling one of these timekeeping giants. Gives you a real clear picture of what is involved. McKays previous book "The Turret Clock Keepers Handbook" is very good for the person who winds and maintains a tower clock but this goes deep into the servicing and repair, the type of machining tools that may be necessary and physical state of the individual doing the work, insurance issues, city bureacracy if the building is government owned, nomenclature etc.. Many things to be understood before jumping headlong into a turret clock.

Look no further - an excellent book on a poorly-understood subject
Immensely impressive work on the subject by a reliable expert. In his preface, Chris McKay makes the telling point that he had not really intended the book to be as detailed as it became as it unfolded but that, as the task progressed, there was no point in restricting the information to be made available. This was a wise decision. The text and the copious illustrations, the many necessary pointers to safety and good practice, would make this book utterly indispensable for anyone interested in, let alone charged with the rescue or maintenance of a turret clock. Church towers are not the safest of places to work, as many have been left unvisited, or only sporadically and partially inspected, so that floors/ladders/trapdoors, being essentially out-of-bounds, can become degraded; they can look deceptively safe simply through lack of disturbance over many years.Mr McKay is a welcome guide to all these features and the book is written with a degree of geniality, even humour.

A great introduction to turret clocks
I found this book to be a great introduction to turret clocks. The terminology, the history, how they work, the problems that a maintenance/ repair person will face, and much more besides. The book is amply supplied with excellent photos that add greatly to the understanding. The book is written in clear and simple language. A very enjoyable read as well as informative.

An excellent technical manual written by an acknowledged expert. This will become a classic work and may well rise above its published price before long.
