The air around the chips keeps them lit (fluffier so to speak) and the pellets ar tighter together. BUT I have never tried pellets.... **Q: Is 10.1 x 7.4 x 3.5 inches true? That would be way too big for my Weber kettle. Thanks.** A: It's interesting that this question comes at me when I am using the smoker box as we speak. You can easily ditch the 'stand' that comes with the unit and rest the box right on the grill surface. I use some wood chips as a starter and fill the box with either wood chunks or wood pellets, and fire it up with a butane cooking torch/lighter....And of course it depends on what size Weber kettle that you have,as it most likely won't fit a 'Smokey Joe'. I love this unit and highly recommend it. **Q: What is the height of the stand that the smoke box sits on?** A: 1 inch **Q: Can you use this in a electric smoker to cold smoke with?** A: Wow: Huhhh??? If you can get it ignited and keep the temperature down less than 100 degrees you might stand a chance. It's really meant to run at higher temperature. I would light one or two charcoal briskets then cover them completely with wood chips and give it a try. PS.
