Gems from the Equinox: Instructions by Aleister Crowley for His Own Magical Order

Having lost the original edition by Llewelyn (1974), I was anxious to replace it and chose this edition instead of the other one. The book arrived on time and met my expectations. Being a fan of Crowley's work, I purchased the republication of Samuel Weisers' 'The Equinox' volumes back in the 1990s, so I already have most of his writings. This is just a nice handy volume to carry around and dip into occasionally. And for the price, it is well worth purchasing.

Good for the Price

Absolute must have for 'hard core' fans. This puts most of the key texts of crowleys teachings including holy texts (except three that are available in one volume) in one very good tome. Fantastic

Wow! Staggeringly, beautiful book. A real stunner. Can't say much about it's contents as I bought it as an Xmas gift. Think they were pleased though.

In the '80's I had a black bound copy of much better printing. However, do not waste hundreds of £'s or dollars in buying original Equinoxor reprints. All you need is here.

This review is specifically a comparison of the New Falcon 2nd Edition, 1st Printing of "Gems" to other printings and editions. Those of us who invest in our books want and need comparisons of publishing facts and flaws. Please see other reviews regarding the most excellent content of this book-- I presume the reader has some familiarity Mr. Crowley, and has some idea of his body of work: this review is for bibliophile collectors. The 2nd Edition, 1st Printing is not the edition pictured, pictured is the 2nd or 3rd Printing. The 1st Printing has a canvas spine and cardboard boards-- very durable. The 1st Printing is Smythe-Sewn, the 2nd and 3rd Printings are glue-bound-- this is to say that the backing/spine of the 1st Printing is very durable where the 2nd & 3rd Printings have a tendency to split at a point that is multiply opened, whereas the Smythe-Sewn edition will lay flat and open. the 2nd and 3rd Printings (pictured) have a non-flexible cardboard spine. The 3rd Edition Gems from the Equinox: Instructions by Aleister Crowley for His Own Magical Order falls somewhere between the 1st Edition and the 2nd Edition 1st Printing in quality and durability. It is a burgundy red leatherette hardback, flexible spine and Smythe-sewn, durable and very affordable for the new student. The edition that most collectors will eventually find that they want is the 1974 Llewellyn Red Leatherette; it's eye-popping red color and silver leaf on the spine and cover makes is a beautiful edition and can be found here: Gems from the Equinox: Instructions by Aleister Crowley for his own magical order . It is also Smythe-Sewn. This 1st edition is often a little more expensive; The New Falcon 2nd edition 1st printing is not as pretty but it is just as durable. Be careful which edition you choose. Compare prices. Compare sellers. Ask for photos. There are some bargains to be found in this title, choose carefully: This is *one* book on Magick that you will want to keep the rest of your life-- careful selection of available editions and printings will ensure you'll find a copy that will last you that long. Dieses Buch bringt verschiedene Aspekte von Crowley's großartigen Werk zur Darstellung. Aleister Crowley war wohl derjenige unter denen, die sich in der neueren Zeit mit Magie oder 'Magick' beschäftigten - ('Magick' stellt einen erweiterten Gesichspunkt des Wortes Magie dar) - und diese auch praktizierten, welcher in sehr tiefe oder auch sehr hohe Ebenen eindrang! Dies ist ein großer Verdienst! Daran ändert sich auch nichts, wenn Crowley teilweise ein etwas absonderliches Benehmen zeigte, weswegen sich manche in sehr ungünstiger Weise über ihn äußerten, meistens, ohne sein Werk wirklich zu kennen und zu verstehen. Crowley empfing auch das 'Liber Al vel Legis', das nach meinem Empfinden die Richtlinien für das 'Neue Aeon' aufzeigt. Dieser Text ist zutiefst symbolisch und verlangt eine gehörige Portion an Einfühlungsvermögen. Denjenigen, welche sich für Crowley's Werk wirklich interessieren, sei dieses Buch unbedingt empfohlen!

Although its content is typically freely accessible online, this item is a potentially useful reference tool for Thelema/Thelemites, practitioners of 'contemporary' Magick, ritualists, occultists, scholars in comparative religion, students of emergent traditions, cultic studies, Orientalism, metaphysics, pseudoscience, parapsychology, plus collectors of esoterica and Crowleyana in particular. This reference textbook is quite heavy, sturdy and appears designed to be handled for frequent use. A colleague accurately compared the book to a solid brick. It does not have a separate dust-jacket cover and features easy-to-read white paper with what I believe is facsimile print. The copy I bought, although used is in good quality and it arrived just in time for the Autumnal Equinox (Fall 2022). It only has a few minor, hardly noticeable dings and scratches. Great value for the total price I paid with shipping and handling (close to the original label price for when this version and edition was published by Weiser Books). Product was received with an obviously damaged spine which existed before being placed in outer packaging which was in good condition. Several pages were also folded over.
