Julie & Julia

just falls over after a great start.
I do not know what to say, but this was a great movies until it hit act three. You literally could feel the movie change gears and they were grinding them. From the argument scene on, it just seems like they did not know how to end it on a high note or put a good twist on it. The movie just seems to peter out when it should have been acceleraing to a finish.Disappointing third act just killed my interest in this movie. Side note, why did this have the rom com feel in it like a Harry met Sally or a Sleepless in Seattle with the main character and her boyfriend, just seemed off.

2 women's struggle to achieve their goals around cooking
Julia & Julia was based upon two true stories. First, Julie Powell set out to cook all the recipe’s in Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking which was documented on her popular blog. Second, was Child’s own life. These two run parallel throughout the movie. Child’s struggles to learn French cooking and then translate that into a book while Powell struggles with her obsessive personality as she tries to get through Child’s book which causes problems with her marriage. The movie is about how both women persevered.Child’s story is by far the more compelling. She attends the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and gets into a class for professional chefs. That’s not before the director talks disparagingly about her and then the cooks look down upon her as a woman. There’s a scene of her cutting an entire mini-mountain of onions at home so that she can compete with her fellow students. Powell does have her moments as well such as when she terrified of cooking her first lobster because they’re alive and she’s afraid of killing them.Together it’s a very engaging story and especially if you love food. It will make you want to eat.C

Liked the movie until the Republican bashing
Very good movie and Meryl Streep gives a great performance along with Stanley Tucci. But Hollywood just could not do anything without the political slant to it. Republicans by name were trashed twice needlessly (like Julie's boss telling her if he was a Republican she would have been fired for lying about being sick, skipping work and then being dumb enough to blog about what she did). Doesn't matter. I would have fired her regardless of party. And this movie was obviously when Hollywood was just sticking its' toes in the water making the f bomb part of the everyday language because Julia drops one towards the end which was not needed or warranted. This movie was how movies used to be. An enjoyable story without the R rated sex scenes and f bombs coming two for every sentence spoken that we have today (which is why Hollywood is losing money by the bucketful), but re-watching this movie this weekend shows the pathetic steps they were taking to indoctrinate people into lies and not being able to speak an intelligent sentence.

Julia is great! Julie not so much!
Granted this is a old movie but our family still enjoyed watching it after many years of theatrical release. Meryl Streep plays the role of Julia Child, Amy Adams shows herself as the blogger Julie Powell. I personally like all the scenes that Meryl Streep plays the role of Julia but while I do like Amy Adams as a movie star but the role in this movie seem to be rather boring especially in the latter half of the movie as it seen to be more of a chore than anything else.Do not get me wrong. The movie is still very nice. Love the character played by Meryl Streep. charismatic, lovable and sweet. The excitement in Amy Adams eyes were noticeable in the first half and I actually started to vest into the character but as the movie unfolded it became a rather chore for me as a viewer to go thru' all that nitty gritty details of her frustration into completing the blog. I think the movie would have been outstanding if more attention was placed on the Julia Child character.Rating the movie experience with three stars!

No wonder Julia Child was offended by Julie Powell's "little project."
Although Amy Adams is brilliant in portraying the emotionally retarded daily meltdowns of Julie Powell, the screenwriters took too much liberty in making Julia Child sound like an emotional train wreck when she got to France with her husband Paul. Stanley Tucci is wonderful as Paul, but the movie doesn't even begin to cover the relationship between the Childs. If I were to enumerate them, this would be a lengthy review.Julia Child was driven and ambitious. One doesn't stumble into the career she had in books, magazines, newspapers, and live performance TV — especially as a woman of the 50's era. Not only was Julia Child one of the most famous celebrity cooks in American history; the first woman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame at The Culinary Institute of America; but she was also a talented athlete, who made gallant contributions to support the United States during World War II. She aided our country by working with the Red Cross as well as the Office of Strategic Services. She was devoted to serving her country, and wanted to enlist in the military, but was turned away. If she hadn’t been rejected, she may have never become the beloved chef the world will never forget.Julia Child led a privileged childhood being born to an affluent family in Pasadena, California. Child attended the Katharine Branson boarding School for Girls, where she learned French, Latin, history, and math. She loved sports and social clubs, and was a part of several teams including basketball, swimming, and tennis. Child continued her education at Smith College in Massachusetts. She graduated from Smith in 1934. A year later, she enrolled in the Packard Commercial School to learn secretarial skills. So you see, when the Childs got to Paris, she was already fluent in French. Paul was a voracious reader and autodidact, but he only attended one year at Columbia. The couple met in India while they were both working for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). While Paris, it was Julia Child who decided to turn her passion for cooking into a career, and enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu."And frankly she was a bit of a pill about it", reporter to Julie Powell. It's not just that the story-line doesn't cover the facts in this film, it is that (and I agree with Julia Child in this part), this story-line doesn't even cover the facts about the Child's relationship and what led her to become the renowned chef and culinary icon, but that Julia Child left a legacy.

Really don't bother
Absolutely dire and tedious - Julie a young American decides to cook all the recipes of a 50s cook (Julia - Meryl Streep) and do a blog about it. We intercut with Julia's life in 50's France as she learns to cook. Interest none. Drama - none. Suspense - none. Witty dialogue - none. Meryl Streep acting - none. After about 30 minutes we could bear it no longer and fast forwarded the rest. Dire in a very dire way, because it was not like a arthouse film which can be dire, but you can vaguely forgive them for trying to be arty. This was middle brow boredom.

Enchanting absolutely enchanting
I stumbled over this movie by chance and what an enriching find. It's a positive and encouraging story ... actually two biographies no less. This movie is all about food and they translate this subject visually so well, you can almost taste, smell the food they are talking about / cooking in the movie. Furthermore, this is a great biography movie how two normal people, like you and me, discover their calling in life or just simply their passion / a purpose. I love Julia Child's story that even in the less likely stage and circumstances in life, you can find your calling. Its never too late and you should definitely never give up. Opportunities are not tied to young age but your will of successeding. Meryl Street as usual excels in her performance, as does Stanley Tucci and the husband of 'Julie'. Amy Adams, in my view, could have played with more gusto and less whiny. My very manly partner had been resisting this movie for a while, one day he was bored .... well and the rest is history, he loves the movie. In fact he joined me at my cooking classes and now enjoys cooking himself! In my view this is a big impact after watching one movie.I can highly recommend Julie and Julia.

Excellent film for lovers of food, Paris or both.
I discovered this film by chance having never heard of Julia Child or her work and in the belief that Elizabeth David had worked largely alone to bring French food to English speaking countries in the 50s and 60s. Both David and Child have clearly been extremely influential, Child perhaps is better known in the United States than in England (or perhaps I just missed the reviews). The film is based on the story of a young woman employed at a call centre who dreams of becoming a writer. As the sleeve notes state she decides that she will cook the entire Child repertoire and report her experiences on her blog. As time passes and new dishes come and go Julie becomes increasingly obsessed by Julia Child and her relationship suffers. In parallel the film flips back to Paris in the 50s where Julia Child is the wife of an Embassy worker, large and dominating in appearance, she enrols at the Cordon Bleu cookery school really for want of something to do. When Child decides to do something she puts all of her enormous energy into her project. In time she meets two French women who have been attempting to collate a recipe book and the film follows the highs and lows of this relationship, rejection of the book and then the search for a publisher which is eventually successful.I don't think I've given away anything here that isn't in the publicity material for the film and I won't spoil the fun of others by describing the plot further. This is not a film that gallops at great pace but it is well acted and evocative of both current life and of life for a certain kind of woman/wife in the 1950s.If you are interested in French cuisine, in Paris and the methods of the Cordon Bleu school, in blogging or in how dreams can turn to obsessions then the modest price of this film would make a good investment.

Love this movie
I absolutely love this movie. I cut my satellite tv off so I didn’t have access to this movie anymore. For a couple of quid, get the dvd. It’s a lovely movie and will give you some really good food ideas!! Mushrooms and tomato fried off in cream cheese and spread on toast is the business! Not exactly how they do it but inspiration is there!!!

Meryl Streep at her best
A great girlie flick that men will love too. Why? I've no idea, but both my partner and my best friend's man love it as much as we do.Julie & Julia sees Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci reunited after working together on The Devil Wears Prada, and they're better together than ever. The story follows the life Julia Childs spent in her 40s with her husband in France and a few other places as he worked for the government. She learns to cook and writes a cookery book with her friends and tries to get it published.Simultaneously the movie follows the story of Julie, a writer who never finished her novel and works at ground zero. She lives in queens and loves to cook and to bring meaning to her life decides to cook her way through Julia Child's cookery book in a year, whilst blogging about it.Both are true stories, both equally fascinating and well intermingled in this hilarious but slightly different "romcom".For anyone interested in cookery, Julia Childs, a good "chick flick" or seeing Meryl Streep act her a** off, this is the movie for you!
