A beautiful, comprehensive guide to going green and living sustainably. Permaculture is an important but often misunderstood method of growing food and building homes in a manner that works with nature, rather than against it, to create beautiful, healthy, and useful gardens. Blending ecology, organic agriculture, green home design, appropriate technology, and biology can be confusing and overwhelming, but The Ultimate Guide to Natural Farming and Sustainable Living simplifies this vast field for practical application. This is a hands-on guide, taking the beginner through each step of the design process, so that anyone can apply permaculture principles to his or her life. While the principles are simple, the in-depth topics cover every aspect of permaculture, including: โข building green homes and passive solar design โข growing edible plant communities and forest gardens โข using no-till and natural farming methods โข creating microclimates for extended growing seasons โข raising livestock with ecological foraging techniques This is a common-sense approach to sustainable living that creates a self-sufficient and low-effort home for the people that live there, whether in the city or the country. The Ultimate Guide to Natural Farming and Sustainable Living isnโt a philosophy book or a dissertation on theory. It is a step-by-step, complete guide to every aspect of permaculture.

Inspiring. But I have no idea what to do now.
This was the book that introduced me to permacuture. I had never even heard the term before, but stumbled upon it when I found this book at a local Barnes &Noble. The first third or so of the book introduces permaculture principles and the philosophy behind it. That alone is incredibly inspiring and maybe want to read more deeply. Unfortunately, I finished reading the book with little idea about how to begin. There are some areas that are somewhat helpful (e.g., section that explains an ideal permaculture garden), and it has some practical suggestions some suggestions, but I would really like to see a worksheet, or a how-to guide, or a bunch of case studies. So, five stars for being inspiring, but 4 stars for practicality.

Good Overview.
Very nice introduction to homesteading. The plant descriptions, although short, provide valuable insights. Definitely worth reading for anyone interested in this subject.
