will it find duplicate photos with different file names?

My experience: It copies multiple copies of the same photos. Not as it is supposed to be. Not happy with PhotoStick!

How is it different than a regular USB device?

Hello. The difference is the software on it. It finds and saves all of your photos with one click. It skips the duplicates too! Very very cool.

Will it backup tiff and any other format, or will it only backup jpeg??

Yes - and .gif, bmp, .png etc. Many formats including videos/movies as well. You select which formats you want it to seek out and copy.
