I liked the portrayal of a very brave man, told in a really identifiable way. Very true to life.

A heart-stopping account of this decent and courageous man’s journey through four tumultuous years. I am really glad that Mike Berry has recorded his father’s experiences – shocking though they are – so movingly, as a timely reminder to future generations. Yet for all the horror, this is ultimately an uplifting book owing to the inspiring conduct of its central character. My own father knew and liked John Berry, and remained forever thankful to him for taking the pressure off of him when the physical exertions of the Burma Railway became too much. RIP John Berry.

I enjoyed reading this book as it was really interesting to learn about what the soldiers had to put up with.

This book gives everything and left me with a feeling of immense sadness at what these brave and proud men endured. It also gave me a new perspective on my life in general and today's society.I will no longer look at "life chores" in the same way. Work,Traffic, social interactions or no milk in the fridge.It is written with cold hard facts that cannot be denied or dismissed but in a way that urges you to turn the page.This book has changed me for the better and the life lessons it gives for today's society should be heeded.I will return to this Harrowing story everytime I feel self pitty creeping in.A timeless story of the determination of life to survive. Absolute must have book on anyone's shelf.

I had no idea that our country en had such a horrendous time at the hands of the barbaric japanese imperial army!I am astounded at the courage and fortitude of this man to overcome the trials and tribulations he did. The current generation need to read this book and realise the sacrifice that previous generations gave for our freedom.Johny Berry comes alive on these pages through the wonderful prose of his son,what an outstanding human being he must have been.This is a must read for our generation to appreciate the sacrifice the that the WW2 generation gave for OUR future.A well written and enduring account of strong willed humaniterian individual. Johny Berry I salute you.

An incredible, real-life story. Something which should always be remembered. An easy and worthwhile read.

I ordered this for my husband for his holiday read. He literally did not put it down and my husband is not a big reader. This is a real-life story and is packed full of emotion and a fascinating insights into the life of the brave that fought for our Country. Would highly recommend.

Such a well written and insightful book. Mike Berry has opened up a part of history to me that many never spoke about. My grandfather, a gentle and kind man, never spoke of his personal experiences from that time but reading this book has helped fill in many gaps for me. A wonderful tribute from a son to his beloved father. I loved it
