## Description

A distinguished Chinese economist reveals the inner workings of China’s economy, government and society―and how it sees the world Recent rising tensions between China and the West largely stem from a basic misunderstanding of China’s approach to governance, argues Dr David Daokui Li, who has served as an advisor to senior Chinese Communist Party leaders as well as major multinational corporations and international economic institutions. In this urgently needed and fascinating book, Li uses personal stories and firsthand accounts to help Western readers gain a better understanding of the Chinese perspective. Li shows how China’s approach to internal governance―often confusing to outsiders―is built on a historical and sociocultural bedrock thousands of years in the making. In demystifying contemporary Chinese society, Li helps readers reconceptualise contemporary China and the implications of its growth. He asserts that China’s rise will be beneficial for the global order, holding out the hope that with shared understanding and mutual learning the Chinese and western systems will eventually find a way to peacefully co-exist.

Review: China and our future - An extremely interesting book but tendacious in parts. He demonstrates convincingly that Chinese government is obsessed with domestic stability and operates in listening mode so that it can nip contentious matters in the bud. I think he also shows that although the government is by definition autocratic, there is far more internal discussion takes place than we realise before decisions are made. However, although the book was published recently, he completely ignores the impact of the current economic meltdown and how it might affect relations between citizen and state. He is incorrect in that China has never had an expantionist foreign policy. There are plenty of maps available to show the varying sizes of China through the ages. However, his plea for a better working relationship with the US is welcome. There are inevitably going to be issues between a rising state and a hegemon - his attempt to downplay the Thucidides trap is unconvincing - but it is in everybody's interest that these tensions are managed in a mutually beneficial way. The book is worth reading but for those with some knowledge of Chinese history will occasionally chuckle at his interpretation.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best book to understand Chinese political system
*by M***W on 4 April 2024*

Amid loud outcries of Chinese Communist Party’s evil plots to dominate the world, this book gives a real portrait of what Chinese political system really is: its history, inner workings, dynamics, impact to society and people, and most importantly its priorities and long term intend. CCP and Chinese government are NOT what Western industrial/military/political leaders (mis)lead you to think. This book offered an interesting and very important counterpoint to many Western academia's and think tanks “conventional” wisdom on China. After reading this book you will realize those so called “independent” analyses are merely the reflective sound in an echo chamber. Reading this book is so refreshing and insightful. It will put your thinking into broader, more realistic, more comprehensive perspectives. In addition, I highly recommend Professor Jin Keyu’s book - The New China Playbook, as a companion reading. That book gives comprehensive review of Chinese economic system. With these two books, you will understand modern China, guaranteed!
