    Interesting Treatise On An Interesting Subject

The Highland warrior, who fought with sword and shield until the mid-18th century, needs little introduction to avid readers of British military history.  There is also no doubt that the front-rank Highland fighting man was an anachronism in 1746, when what John Prebble referred to as "the last feudal army in Europe" charged into a line of modern muskets and bayonets at Culloden with sword in hand.  However, what is not well-known or understood is the culture which produced, at such a late date, men who were willing to fight to the death over matters of honor or, less-often, politics.  Christopher Thompson has done an admirable job of revealing what motivated these warriors in Highland Martial Culture.  While the information on fighting techniques and dueling was interesting, what I found most arresting was the Gaelic poetry, with translations, dealing with the martial arts.  I would recommend this book to anyone with a desire to find out more about the aesthetic side of Highland sword play.  The book compliments his other books on Highland broadswords and knife fighting.

this book is exellant. it offers the reader a perspective of many different sections of the Gaelic warrior culture, not just from the view of a warrior. I highly recommend this book to any one.
