BraceAbility Hard Plastic Thumb Splint | Arthritis Treatment Brace to Immobilize & Stabilize CMC, Basal and MCP Joints for Trigger Thumb, Tendonitis Pain, Sprains (Medium - Left Hand)

I injured my thumb fracturing the trapezium and severing the UCL. I honestly thought I just had a bad sprain. I didn’t seek treatment until three weeks later. It took several weeks more go through x-rays and scans, and referrals to orthopedists of varying levels of expertise until I finally got to see a specialist hand surgeon. My primary doctor told me to get the thumb in a spica and keep it still. I didn’t like the heavy nylon and velcro monstrosities available at my local store. This brace really protected the area which lessened the inflammation and swelling at the joint. A bonus is that it’s rigid a lightweight and has a nice design, and a simple one strap Velcro closure that works great. This brace made my nearly three week wait from diagnosed to surgery much more comfortable. Additionally, 5 strong stars for the brace but, only 3 for the liner. The liner fits great and feels good and makes the brace all the more comfortable. However, the edges are unfinished and come unraveled quickly. There should be at least two liners included so one can be washed while the other is wore, they get stinky.

I've been battling with De Quervain's synovitis - inflammation of the tendons of the thumb - for a couple years now. The conventional treatment is to wear a brace for 8-12 weeks that does what this brace does, stabilize the thumb and hold it in a lower stress position. Lots of other braces do that too. Most of them are much more substantial in size, some also stabilize the wrist. I wore one of those, the biggest type, for 12 weeks when I was first afflicted a couple years ago, and it did nothing for me. Pain got a bit better, but didn't go away as I'd been told it would. And worse, it was almost impossible to type on a keyboard, and difficult to do much of anything with that hand. It never went away, but was low level enough I could live with it. Problem ramped up again recently. Bought this brace because it was different looking, looked like less intrusive. It's WAY less intrusive. But at the same time it must be more effective, because the pain has been fading. I still wear the big heavy ones to sleep, which lets me wash the little glove-let thing, dry by morning. Do measure your thumb, as the directions say, and where they say to measure. Here's a trick. Wrap masking tape or some other tape around your thumb at that point. Not really tight, just like you were taping your thumb on. Then cut the tape off (slide scissors underneath to cut) and measure the tape.

I have to keep my thumb immobilized for an extended period of time and have used several different types of braces. This brace allows me to do dishes, swim, and wash my hands. It’s also good for doing anything where a brace might get wet or get food o. It because it is easy to wash. There is moderate discomfort around the wrist, but no more so than any other left/right universal thumb brace.

I bought this product to protect my two lower thumb joints and bought one for each thumb. I liked the product and it seemed to do a good job of immobilizing those joints. However, after only six months of minimal use, the left hand version cracked where the velcro strap is thredded through to tighten it, rendering it useless. It was very disappointing to learn that I could not exchange it.

It kept my sprained thumb immobile which was good. However when you unfasten the velcro strap, it rips the velcro loop out of the plastic fastener every time. Also, even though I wore the cloth glove that comes with it, the hard plastic opening near the tip of the thumb really (and painfully) presses into the thumb. I could only wear it a few hours at a time. With a slight redesign it could function much better.

This thumb splint gives excellent support for my CMC joint pain. It feels very similar to the type of hard plastic splint they custom-make for you at the hospital or hand therapy clinic, which is exactly what I wanted. It keeps my thumb stable, limits painful movements, and feels secure without being overly bulky. For anyone dealing with thumb arthritis, CMC irritation, or thumb instability, this is a great brace. Very supportive, well-designed, and absolutely worth it.

Perfectly customizable... Thanks to all the previous reviews, I was able to make an informed decision. When it arrived, it was perfectly usable with the cloth glove but I wanted to use this without. I also wanted to customize it and address some of the shortcomings noted by others. 1) First I wanted to flare out some of the edges for comfort. I used an air soldering rework station set at 230C and the 4 blower setting, using the medium tip to heat the edges one section at a time. I then used a pair of pliers to bend the edges up. The results can be seen in the first picture. 2) Without the sock, my thumb was too loose and too short so the edge was rubbing too. I used my hot air station again along with a hose clamp to reduce the diameter for a snug fit for my thumb while bending the edge back with pliers to flare out the edge. See second picture. 3) Finally, there was one review about how hard it was to remove the Velcro. That’s solved by me cutting a small piece of fuzzy Velcro and placing it at the very tip of the strip. Now I have an open spot to grab when peeling off the Velcro. Third picture. Some will say that’s a lot of trouble and work to go through. No one product can work for everyone. It’s not possible. Besides, what’s a little or even a lot of work for pain relief?

I purchased this first in large, according to the measurements given on the listing. It was huge. So I ordered again, this time a medium. There is a significant difference between large and medium. However, the first one I bought came in a box with other items, and arrived just fine. The second one came in a paper reinforced bag, and arrived broken in half. I returned it (very easy) for an identical replacement. The second one shipped out right away, but it was shipped in a poly bag, and also arrived broken. Since I really needed it and this was the second return (the only option left was refund), and the break was in a spot that I could deal with, I just super-glued and duct taped that sucker and wore it. It works great for keeping my thumb immobile while I sleep which significantly reduces the pain. The only reason for the 2 star rating is shoddy shipping. If you hit the lottery and it ships in a box with something else, you're good.
