Best disposal for the money
I considered buying one of InSinkErator's newer, quieter models. I opted for this one for several reasons: (1) Identical plumb-in dimensions to my existing model that finally broke after 14+ years (newer models are nearly identical, but not exact and I didn't have room or patience to re-do the P-trap if needed), (2) this is a full 1-HP with stainless steel grinder components, but for a much lower price than the high-end model, (3) I didn't need to pay for a "pretty" unit—once you install it, you never look at it again, and (4) most of the noise can be eliminated with a $5 plastic strainer, which I use to keep flatware out of the drain when washing up.The way the newer units eliminate much of the noise is to use a rubber splash guard designed to create a "water dam" to isolate the grinding chamber. Indeed, this is effective, but it causes what I call "floaties." It makes it more difficult to get food waste into the grinding chamber. I prefer to shove everything down there at once, put the strainer in place, and grind away. 5 maybe 10 seconds later, I'm done. A slightly louder unit is not a problem.By the way, one of my new hobbies is testing the unit's limits. I put just about anything I can down the drain. The only exceptions so far are: (1) egg shells, no point and can stick to plumbing, (2) onion skins, too thin to grind, (3) mango pit, it was ground down, but not all the way, (4) corn husks, just made a tangled mess, (5) banana peels, tangled mess, and (6) avocado skins, I guess it was like trying to grind leather. Meat scraps, poultry bones, citrus peels, and corn cobs are all game. It's enormously satisfying. If you're replacing an existing InSinkErator and using the existing installation hardware, do what I did: Use a spare scissor jack to lower the old unit and raise the new one into place. Makes installation a breeze.

Direct Swap for Badger 5. Easy install!
My Badger 5 failed in a spectacular fashion with a hole blown out the side and leaking everywhere. It was original to the house and was 20+ years old, however. On to the 1 HP review. Looking at its product dimensional specs, I thought it would be too big for a direct swap. I have minimal under-cabinet space and almost zero clearance from the side where the disposal connects to the ptrap. Rearranging plumbing was out of scope of this replacement. I had nothing to fear as even though it's bigger, this fit perfectly. More on this later. This unit does not come with a power cord, but I was able to scavenge the one from the old unit. Hardest part of the install was swapping the old cord into the new unit...it used some plastic plug to hold it in instead of the common screw-in romex unit. Had to pry it out with a large screwdriver and then tamp it back into the new unit. Removing the flange, connecting pipe, and dishwasher connections was a straightforward affair. The dimensions provided are max dimensions. The side where the disposal drainage hole is located has a carved out flat section so it fit perfectly where the old disposal was. I reused the existing sink connection and bracket, so installing was a simple lift and twist. I'm not sure why people in other reviews are using car jacks or supports for this step. Align it to the bracket and you'll only need to lift it for 3 seconds to get it on the bracket. Use the provided wrench to tighten it up.The included L-shaped drain pipe didn't work for my application. I only needed the section of pipe coming straight out, so I cut off the rest. The remaining steps were simple bolt on and replacement of connections. Both old and new disposals used slotted hex bolts for the flange. I had no room to use a screwdriver and used and open-ended spanner to remove and replace.Noise level is acceptable, especially comparing to the previous one after 20 years. No leaks and grinds like it should. Hopefully we'll get as long a use of this as the last one, especially with the upgraded stainless steel parts the 1HP has over the Badger 5. FYI - at the time of this writing the 1HP is the same price as the Insinkerator Quiet Compact, which was my alternate choice.

Works great
So I got a new garbage disposal, the installation went really good no problem. Only bad thing is it's a little noisy but I knew I wasn't getting the most guitest one.

Powerful, SS Construction
The unit is powerful with stainless steel construction. It worked well. But at startup, it has such kick force. If not installed correctly, it could kick off for the sink flange. Mine did. I had to call in plumber to install another type Insinkerator unit (evolution excel). This 1hp unit was discarded.

Our third and hopefully last...
This is the top of the line Badger model with stainless steel parts in the grind chamber (verified), so this is quite possibly the last one we'll need. Originally, we installed the Badger 5 (the 1/2 HP model) and its grind plate failed two years after the warranty expired. The second one, a Badger 5XP (the 3/4 HP model), lasted for nearly 7 years (4 years after the warranty expired) - the grinding plate started to rust through, letting large food particles through, potentially clogging the drain. This one (Badger 1 HP) comes with a 7 year warranty, has stainless steel components in the grind chamber (the grind plate appears to be stainless steel), so I expect it will last for 12 or more years. From reading reviews, many folk seem to be disappointed when their disposer needs replacing at all, as if it will last forever. In my experience, they are like most appliances, they do their job for longer than the warranty, but they do wear out eventually. We are not disappointed that we've had to buy three disposers so far, it's not like they are very expensive, and they do a great job at reducing the compost waste we have to deal with. I put mine through a lot by putting cooked bones through it with regularity. It's actually a surprise to me that they last as long as they do. :)Highly recommended product and brand. And, Amazon's prices are the lowest you will find for this item. :D
