Adult Attachment and Couple Psychotherapy: The 'Secure Base' in Practice and Research

It's kind of boring read. I kept falling asleep as I read it. The information is useful, but it's very dry writing. I probably wouldn't purchase it again.

The attachment theory primarily describes the experiences children have with their caregiver and how those experiences inform their life decisions. I was interested in how the author had applied this theory to couple relationships. The author is very methodical in explaining his clinical approach and the methods he used. I found this aspect a little boring since I am not a clinician however, I found a lot of useful information throughout the text. The author defines four types of attachments: secure, preoccupied, fearful and dismissing. He also describes couples who combine the same or different types of attachment styles. The second half of the book contains a number of chapters about specific extreme cases that are pertinent to clinicians. His recommendation for treatment is that the couple participate in psychotherapy where the clinician performs the function of a "secure base" and the couple attaches and then explores solutions to their individual issues while engaging in a joint discussion.

Please note I am commenting on the Kindle Version as being disappointing - NOT THE BOOK!!I purchased a kindle copy of Adult Attachment and couple psychotherapy by Christopher Clulow but I find that there are a number of problems so that make it useless for using in my studies and a physical book would have been better. I am very disappointed because many expected features do not work as expected and prevent this being a useful reference book.1) I find that if I want to view a diagram when I click on it, it enlarges but it is so poor quality it is impossible to read and therefore useless. 2) I also find if reference is made to eg, look at the diagram, appendix, a chapter, I am unable to click on the reference because the link to go to it is not active, as experienced in my previous study books which made them user friendly. 3) Finally, it does not provide a user friendly index in as much, no links and when I go to table of contents it just shows: chapter 1, chapter 2 etc with no reference to what may be in it.Unless these problems are sorted then I would not recommend buying the kindle version of this book because it renders it almost useless. However the information in the book is very good but also the research information is not put in tables for comparison but takes over several pages makingit difficult to access and make sense of easily. The book may be better on this.
