Anxious 11 year old
I was recommended this at primary school by our educational psychologist. My youngest is about to transition to high school and COVID plus life atm, it’s been tough. This book has been our rock. We’ve read it alone, together just us and with dad/ big bro too. It’s prompted discussions and helped us all cope with the anxiety that is inevitable at his age, but heightened right now. Thoroughly recommend. It’s helped us!

It's Ok
Probably good for a teen to read and gain some insight into their experience. Not as useful to a parent with an anxious teen I felt.

I am 15 and have very bad anxiety. This book helps, and it's easy to read and understand. Nice size too! Having read the whole book, I would especially recommend it to anyone who has panic attacks, eating disorders or OCD.

A Must Read For Everyone!
This is the most comprehensive and easy to understand book on anxiety that I have ever read. I stumbled upon this book as I was trying to find help for my teen with anxiety, but realized it helped me much more. It has practical techniques for identifying and dealing with anxiety and I have recommended it to just about everyone I've talked to in the last few weeks. Thank you Jennifer Shannon for writing this book in a way we can all understand.

Clear and Engaging
I like this book so much because of the way Ms Shannon teaches us. In a clear and engaging manner, she takes a complex subject and puts it into simple language. Although written specifically for teens, the ideas and writing are strong enough to help anyone. Shannon uses the simile of an anxious brain being like a monkey’s mind, “. . . its relentless stream of scary thoughts is like a frightened monkey’s chatter” to give us an image we can remember. She then teaches us how to stop the monkey’s chattering. We all know that hearing stories is a powerful way to understand and remember ideas, and Ms Shannon uses this technique so effectively. She tells stories of fictitious teens . . . of how they become anxious, how the anxiety affects their lives, and how they get better. The stories appear with perceptive illustrations that enhance the ideas and provide the reader with a memorable visual. I related instantly to the characters, and the stories really helped me make a plan to use the “Tools that Tame the Monkey” and “Tools that Rule the Monkey”. Shannon follows up her stories with straightforward explanations of classic CBT tools I can follow in order to get better (to stop the monkey chatter). When my “monkey brain” is chattering away at night when I’m trying to go to sleep, I practice the techniques Ms Shannon taught me, and am getting better at being able to relax and sleep.
