Instead of wearing it around my neck I kept it looped to the shoulder strap of my purse. I could keep it tethered while taking photos or clip it off and on again easily. Even when unclipped I could find my phone quickly in my bag by hauling on the short section of tether - the phone never disappeared into my bag.
