The 501 Original fit sits at the waist, has slightly more room in the seat are, has a regular thigh, with a button fly and the straight leg has about a 16" leg opening. The 502 Regular Taper jean sits BELOW the waist, has a regular thigh with a zipper fly and the tapered leg has about a 14.5" leg opening. Especially if you dry them (even on the lowest heat setting). I wear Vans Sk8 Hi hi tops and the pants are perfect for wearing with these hi top shoes. Since my jeans shrunk, they went from easily fitting Naturally over the tops of the shoes, to having to pull the pants over the tops of the shoes but the pants will usually pull up and sit on top of the hi top shoes which is fine for me. The Regular Jean colored pants I have did not shrink nearly as much and barely shrunk at all. All of the black pairs I have all shrunk quite a bit. I just bought a brand new pair and I must have gotten used to the shrunken ones because now I feel like the new ones are way to baggy so I dont wear them yet.
