Three Wishes: From the bestselling author of Big Little Lies, now an award winning TV series

I initially felt a little disgruntled on realising that this apparently 2016 novel, which I had assumed was Moriarty's most recent book, was in fact a reprint and the novel had originally been published in 2003. It was a little slow to get going and initially I wasn't keen but soon became hooked and it was one of those books I did not want to come to an end. The range of characters is not too wide so it is easy enough to keep track of who is who although I did occasionally struggle to remember which of the triplets was which - initially a more detailed character portrayal would have been useful. The pace of the novel is fast and the dialogue is convincing and realistic. I liked all three of the women and unlike some previous reviewers I did care about what happened to them. There are some lovely touches of humour here as well and I did laugh out loud on a number of occasions. The novel was a little too short and I would have loved more! This is a thoroughly enjoyable read and I thought it was fabulous!

They say that good things come in threes. Maybe not in the case of this book. First of all I will say that I am a HUGE fan of Liane Moriarty and I keenly devour pretty much everything that gets published with her name on it. She is hands down one of my favourite writers. Consequently I now have ludicrously high expectations whenever I get my hands on one of her books. For me, Three Wishes was not a disappointment but at the same time it didn't wow me the way that some of Moriarty's other books have. The story centres around the three Kettle triplets (and yes, there are relentless references to the fact that they are triplets throughout the book), who are now approaching their 34th birthday. How exciting. The story jumps around a lot and the writing style is somewhat peculiar as the chapters skip between the different Kettle sisters with the occasional snippet from a random bystander that has observed the girls at some points in their lives. Peculiar but not unenjoyable. Throughout the book, each of the very different sisters have their own problems to overcome and their own demons to deal with. Despite the pretty cutesy blurb and the use of humour in this book, there are actually some pretty dark themes that appear throughout the story. Lyn, the driven and level-headed Kettle sister is struggling with the demands of being a mother, a wife and running her own business with no help. Gemma, the quirky eccentric sister, fails to hold down both a solid relationship and a job after the death of her fiancee over ten years ago. Finally, Cat, who is arguably the most volatile of the sisters, has to deal with the breakdown of her marriage and coming to terms that she is on her own for the first time in her life. It all sounds like a pretty standard look at the lives of average suburban people but the book is actually quite a lot better than that. Like I said, there are some very dark themes that are explored in this seemingly fluffy book. As I've already said, this book didn't amaze me like some of Liane Moriarty's previous work such as Big Little Lies and The Husband's Secret. That being said, I did enjoy it and I got through it quickly. What I love about books by Liane Moriarty is how they suck you into these seemingly ordinary people's lives and before you know it, you are emotionally invested in these people and their relationships, dreams and fears. It really is quite brilliant. For me, what stopped Three Wishes from being five stars was the fact that like many other books of this genre, it appeared to end almost too happily, to the point where the ending becomes abrupt and unrealistic. For me, that always spoils what was otherwise a perfectly good book. What also got on my nerves slightly was the incessant referencing to the fact that these girls were triplets. Despite their completely different personalities and to an extent, their completely different lives, the only thing that seemed to define these women were the fact that they all shared a womb once. For me, it felt like this devalued their characters. They were all worth more than that label. Overall, I enjoyed Three Wishes and would definitely recommend it to others. It had just the right amount of humour, great character development and a solid story line. 4 Stars ****

Wow, I loved this book. The third Liane Moriarty I've read, and she has leapt into my all-time-favourite author list with gusto! All three that I've read have been brilliant. This book tells the story of three sisters (triplets) and the year between their 33rd birthday and their 34th one. Unlike her others (at least, the ones I've read), this is not crime, but it has the same feel of mystery and build-up and story/character development. It also has the brilliantly witty observations of every-day life. My favourite quote (probably because it sounds like a day with my sisters!) is: "Lyn came from a family of poor listeners. If you had something to say, you had to battle constant interruptions, challenges, outright boredom – 'Get on with it' – and loud triumph over any trip-ups – 'Ha! You just said the opposite two seconds ago!'" I'm always happy curled up with a book, but this is one of those rare books when I was so engrossed I didn't want to put it down for a second. Highly recommended.

3.5 Stars I really enjoyed this. As ever with Liane Moriarty, it had lots of sharp dialogue, lots of flawed characters, lots of nice plot twists and family intrigue. It was her first book, and in that sense it's amazing, but having read all of her others, it was to be expected that in some ways it wasn't so good. Plot a bit too predictable, characters not quite flawed enough, ending a bit to schmucky. But as I said, a first book - amazing. And I raced through it. And I did love the sisters theme, I really loved that - I loved the way they are so protective of each other to outsiders, but inside it's often open war and shifting alliances - now that really rang a bell. So in a way I'm being a wee bit unfair with the 3 stars, but it's because I expect so much, and I have read so much better - which is not to imply this wasn't fab. It was. Now I want a new one please.

Cat, Lyn and Gemma are triplets. They live life to the full and very often in public. At one birthday dinner which has been getting louder and louder there is an altercation and one sister ends up in hospital. The book then backtracks through the period before the argument and shows what led up to it and what happens afterwards. At the beginning of each section the author also includes an event from the sisters' lives which was also lived out in public but told from the point of view of a bystander - the main narrative usually then describes the event again during the course of the story from the sisters' point of view. This sounds complicated but it isn't. The book is well crafted and the idea that the three sisters have all their major life events in public is clever and unusual. The book is the story of the three sisters and their various life problems but particularly focussing on their relationship with each other and how that impacts on things. The sisters are intelligent and capable women but each has a life issue to be dealt with or overcome and the story also features their estranged parents and their grandmother. A lot of this is reasonably familiar ground for the readers of "women's fiction" but Liane Moriarty writes with wit and a wry humour which definitely elevates it above many other offerings in this genre. I enjoyed this book a lot. It is a light read but involving and although I would probably not particularly like to know this family in real life I definitely engaged with them and their problems, hoping all the way through for a heart warming and uplifting ending. I have read all of this author's output and was aware that this is actually her first published novel. I don't think her inexperience shows in the writing but I have become used to the way that she often turns books around with a clever twist or a sudden revelation. This book doesn't do that and to some extent it, therefore, disappointed - but it was only a disappointment in comparison to this author's other novels and my expectations not when compared with other writers. If I had read it as the first of her books I would probably have been more delighted with it - this is a bit unfair on the author but it is my reading experience.

Once I got used to all the characters I loved it. Kept me awake reading many a night. Off to read more!

Great story, interesting and well-explored characters. Excellent descriptions of feelings and thoughts you’ve had yourself, but not expressed. Highly recommended, as are all her books.

I really enjoyed this book. Meet Cat, Lyn and Gemma who are triplets. My head went into overdrive to what it must have been like for the sisters growing up with siblings that are the same age. Also how as a parent do you cope with three babies! When we first meet them though they are celebrating their thirty fourth birthday. The story does flick to the glimpses of when the women are children but it mainly concentrates to the run up to present day. All the sisters are quite different in personalities. All going through different things in their own lives. Cat was the one that stood out the most for me. I think because she is quite a tough cookie and has the most to deal with out of the sisters. Even though at times she probably isn't that likable, I really had a soft spot for her. There is a real sense of family in this book. Not just with siblings but with their parents also. One character I really loved was the nana. What a fabulous character. She brings a lot of humor and even though the rest of the family get frustrated with her, they love her dearly. Three Wishes is a wonderful family drama of which I got totally wrapped into. Whilst everything isn't plain sailing for this family and they have their share of disagreements, I think it reminds us that no matter what, we only get one family and whilst they may not be perfect, they are there to be treasured. A delightful and entertaining read.

As always, Liane Moriaty does not disappoint. Her style is tight and moves at a good pace, her characters, although a little larger than life, are appealing and identifiable with. An enjoyable trip around familiar social mores and human foibles.Any funny too.

Este es el segundo libro que leo de Liane Moriarty (el primero fue The Husband's Secret) y ahora me compraré otro. Me encanta su estilo de escritura, es muy fresco y descriptivo. Sus personajes generar empatía y las historias te atrapan desde el primer momento. Para mi esta autora ha sido todo un descubrimiento.

Après avoir lu ses dernier romans en français, j'attaque ses premières parutions en version originale faute de traduction disponible. Ce livre est vraiment digne de l'auteur, on reconnaît dès les premières pages son style et la lecture est fluide. Je n'ai pas vu les pages défiler ! Si vous avez aimé "Le secret du mari" et "Big little lies" n'hésitez pas, vous ne serez pas déçus.

My sister has recommended me "Three wishes" by Liane Moriarty and at first I was a bit sceptical, as I generally read other books. But when I started reading I noticed that the characters were really interesting and kind of 3-dimensional, so I kept reading and was really grateful for this hint. A gread read, not just for summer !
