Greenworks 40V Brushless Self Propelled Lawnmower, 21 Inch Electric Lawnmower, 5.0Ah Battery and Charger Included

I snagged this Greenworks 21" self-propelled electric lawn mower during a Prime Day deal, despite some mixed reviews. As a long-time Greenworks user with their edger and blower, I was confident in the brand and already owned several compatible batteries. The advertised 45-minute runtime seemed optimistic, but I wasn’t concerned. In my test, the included 5Ah battery lasted just under 25 minutes, which I expected given the heavy load—cutting thick, damp St. Augustine grass while using the self-propel feature nonstop. Battery life clearly depends on the motor’s workload, and this was a demanding test. UPDATE: I've cut my lawn two more times with continuing good results. The most recent time I did not use the self-propel feature at all and got about 36 minutes on the battery. It was still showing one of the four charge lights illuminated so I don't how much longer it would have operated. This mower is a worthy successor to my aging Lawn Boy 21" self-propelled mower. Unpacking and setup were straightforward, and I was impressed by the mower’s sturdy, well-built construction—solid and durable. The variable-speed transmission is a standout feature, intuitive to adjust and responsive. Starting the mower is effortless, and the self-propel engagement mirrors my old Lawn Boy: release the bar for about half a second, and the wheels free up for easy backward pulling. The large rear wheels also further enhance maneuverability and make it easy to push without engaging The self-propel feature. The single-lever height adjustment is simple and convenient, making quick changes a breeze. Cutting performance was excellent, even through heavy, wet St. Augustine grass. The mower powered through with minimal clumping, and the side discharge chute worked cleanly—a strong showing for such challenging damp conditions. Overall, this Greenworks mower is a powerful, user-friendly, and well-constructed machine. As a replacement for my old gas mower, it’s a clear upgrade. No regrets so far—highly recommended for anyone looking for a reliable electric option!

My old Black and Decker mower made it 14 years and batteries since and now are 1/4th the size. I went from a huge heavy car battery mower to a tiny single battery. How does this Greenworks 21" mower with a single 40v battery fare? It just mowed my entire lawn with ease using the entire charge. I'm not sure how long it took, but maybe 30-40 minutes. My old B&D used to do that when it was new, but over time it could only do half. This mower was just as strong cutting the lawn, had an easy height adjustment, and the self propelled worked great going up a steep incline I have as well. Zero complaints. This mower was also half the cost of the old B&D when I bought it. Now to see if this one can last 14 years! Fingers crossed. Edit: I've done several mowings since I've bought this and it's still fantastic. It goes through heavy grass pretty easily, and it has a slot for a spare battery as well. For the cost, this thing is just amazing. My lawn is on the smaller side and takes about 30 mins tops to do, so I can do everything in a single charge. Barely. I did buy two cheaper spares and even though they advertised being larger capacity than the brand name one, they only lasted about 2/3 as long. I'm not complaining because they're really really cheap and pretty light all things considered. You could buy 10 of these things for the cost of a replacement battery for my old B&D.

I bought this last year when I retired our wired electric lawn mower. I wanted/needed the wheel assist because our yard is hilly. And losing the extension cord makes a big difference. It does a great job, with 2 caveats...battery life and wheel assist. My backyard is very small, big garden with a lawn boundary+. I've been running out of juice mid-mow...well, honestly, at the end of the mow. I think it's because I've got the mower down at 2". It's just a theory, but if it's cutting relatively long grass, it uses more power. I'll be raising it up to 3-4" for the rest of the summer. I bet I'll be able to mow it all without it conking out...but I bot another battery nonetheless. Sittin' around waiting for recharge as I write. And, while I really appreciate the wheel assist, it's powerful enough that it gets away from me. It takes off and drags me with it, lol. So I most often need to temper the speed by just moving the bar an inch or so. It's a little herky-jerky that I can live with, I guess. It's a good mower and I'm learning to make it work.

This is the best mower I have ever owned. I started using battery operated mowers a few years ago for the convenience of winter storage. My lawns were small and I did not need a lot of mower. My new home has a much larger yard with a lot of uneven ground and even some extensive grades. My wife talked me into getting a self-propelled mower, which was a great idea. I figured it would drain the batteries too quickly, but that is not the case. The cut on this mower is amazing. It is the most even and complete cut I've ever gotten from any kind of more. I highly recommend this mower. If you have a fairly large yard, I would recommend that you have a minimum of two batteries but you will probably need three to four. I have four but typically use only three. I do not use the self-propelled all the time, but only when needed.

Bad design. Self-propelled is a terrible and pointless feature specially with the poor design. I had an earlier model mulching mower which had two blades. Honestly not a fan of that design either but at least that one had the 2 battery capartments that would auto switch to the 2nd battery when the 1st died. This mower has a 2nd slot but it just holds the battery. i have a fairly small yard takes me about 20ish minutes to mow. So for me the self propelled bit was kinda pointless but also it was a bit too fast even at the slowest speed. Even with my small yard i go through 2 fully charged batteries even without using the propelled. So considering how much more the self propelled bit would drain the battery and the extra weight it adds to the mower and the batteries not having auto switching.... I would just go with a different one.... and as for the post on here about the mower running someone over.... sure. the mower comes with the handle for the self propelled bit and the starter tied down. the instructions probably tell you to cut those ties and if not common sense certainly would. but yes.... poor design that the self propelled portion of the mower doesnt have a safety feature and is just always on when the bar is held down regardless of the mower being powered on. Honestly think they should discontinue this model or rework it. It needs bigger batteries, auto switching, and clearly some kinda safety for the self propelled portion as well as maybe being able to slow it down a bit more as the few times ive tried using that feature its just too fast for my size lawn and how uneven the terrain is
