The fit, firmness and breathing is important for function.
I have worn maiden form waist trainer before but with only one row of hooks and in a Large. I’m in my late 50’s, 160/5’8 and ordered the Medium with 3 rows of hooks and eye closures. I’m glad I did, it is sculpting and firm but not unbearable. I tried it on with the hooks close to the edge and the middle hooks and was very comfortable. The material is breathable but strong. I intended to let my stomach out and it’s after lunch and it fit well on a full stomach.

surprisingly comfortable
I purchased this item to support a torn intercostal muscle! It did the trick and kept me from gasping in pain every time I took a breath or moved! Who would ever guess a muscle between the ribs did so much work for the body. I have worn this to give myself a bit of a boost around the waistline as well and it is surprisingly comfortable when worn for several hours.

Too snug for my frame
I'm 5'8" and 150 lbs but the size was too small for my frame.

Good compression, runs on the small side
I have never worn a waist trainer before, but the area that needs the most help is my stomach area, so I thought this could be useful for certain outfits. It is well made, but it definitely runs on the smaller side, so it might make sense to size up if you are unsure. There are three rows of hooks so you can adjust the tightness depending on what is most comfortable for you, but I had a difficult time closing it on the loosest row. The boning in this piece makes it not super comfortable to sit down in for long periods of time, and it can't be worn under anything too form fitting because the lines from the hooks are pretty thick and do show through, but for stiffer fabric, this does do a great job.
