This is about the height of the license plate is the area where it will fold down and back to. The hole spacing is probably less, so as long as you have some overhang room in the back, I suppose that you could go with less. The bracket will protrude out about 1.5in so the plate can fold up. The 7.5in area should be parallel to the ground so when your license plate is in the upright position, it is perpendicular to the ground and parallel to the front of your car. Mine sloped slightly, so the net impact was that my plate slopes slightly back to the car. It works out okay since my front grill also is sloped and it parallels that. I took a quick look at some Mazda 3 pictures on the web and it looks like there are a couple areas where this might work. You just need to identify a sufficient mounting surface. The hardware that came with the kit was excellent, and I had mine installed in about 10 minutes.
