A homeless jockey, a millionaire, a washed-up cowboy and a horse named Seabiscuit are the four unlikely heroes who found hope in each other and inspired an entire generation. Tobey Maguire, Academy Award nominee Jeff Bridges and Academy Award winner Chris Cooper star in the critically acclaimed and audience-pleasing Seabiscuit , the triumphant and exhilarating true story about the power of hope and the courage to make dreams come true. Filled with epic action, drama and heart, Seabiscuit will take you on the ride of a lifetime. Proving that truth is often greater than fiction, the handsome production of Seabiscuit offers a healthy alternative to Hollywood's staple diet of mayhem. With superior production values at his disposal, writer-director Gary Ross ( Pleasantville ) is a bit too reverent towards Laura Hillenbrand's captivating bestseller , unnecessarily using archival material--and David McCullough's narration--to pay Ken-Burns-like tribute to Hillenbrand's acclaimed history of the knobbly-kneed thoroughbred who "came from behind" in the late 1930s to win the hearts of Depression-weary Americans. That caveat aside, Ross's adaptation retains much of the horse-and-human heroism that Hillenbrand so effectively conveyed; this is a classically styled "legend" movie like The Natural , which was also heightened by a lushly sentimental Randy Newman score . Led by Tobey Maguire as Seabiscuit's hard-luck jockey, the film's first-rate cast is uniformly excellent, including William H Macy as a wacky trackside announcer who fills this earnest film with a much-needed spirit of fun. -- Jeff Shannon Review: a true, uplifting and inspiring film - This is a wonderful film, based on the true story of the race horse Seabiscuit. I am not ashamed to say that I have watched this film at least 3 times and every time it has brought tears to my eyes - tears of joy for the determination of people, and horses, to overcome adversity and to recover from terrible sedbacks, and to go on to achieve the remarkable. Set around the period of the depression in the 1920's the movie relates the story of how 3 people- Seabiscuit's owner, trainer and jockey, overcame their personal losses and tragedies in pursuit of their dreams. Superbly recreated scenes which almost exactly match the original newsreel footage, and totally convincing acting from all the main players make this an entirely convincing and satisfying movie - one of my favourite films ever. You don't need to know anything much about horse racing to enjoy this film - try it - you'll love it! Review: One of those very very good films that you see every so often - I loved this film when I first saw it after it came out so I decided to pick it up off desertcart and watch it again. It's as good as I remembered it to be and even my girlfriend adored it. It's a powerful story of a 4 key players. Firstly the recluse trainer who communicates better with non compliant horses than humans. A charismatic owner who suffers a tragedy early on in the story. A jockey who has his own problems which are evident as the story progresses and finally and, most importantly, the horse himself. This is by and large a feel good film, but one done in a very gripping manner with its own share of disappointments along the way. This is a film up there with fantastic films like Shawshanks Redemption and is very definitely worth buying- you'll love every minute.

Wonderful Story
A brilliant movie about a homeless boy, millionaire and a cowboy brought together by a horse that became famous, very moving and great to watch with their combination they succeed in the race circuit. The actors are fabulous so I rated this an A grade plus for the full on entertainment that goes with the story, the problems of training and the up and downs in their journey to glory. Highly recommended as this is a great movie and worth having and watching. Now time to relax with feet up and munchies by your side. Enjoy!

Shame about its legs..
dts 5.1 is great, the encode needs no enhancing..just play it through your home theatre kit on 'standard' to benefit from it.,just wonderful. Is over 2 hours,,not that it drags a bit, because it doesn't,but make sure you have a butty with you coz the movies sentiment will be too exhausting otherwise.Pause if the kettle beckons because this too will be a requirement-very exhausting,,BUT it is worth it.The transfer is remarkable on this '03 release-was on mine anyway.,looked & sounded like a bluray.(modern equipment is great)Strongly recommend watching through a 5.1 home theatre kit, dvd's are fantastic-and I think people forget that with the onset of high def. I recommend this dvd,the quality of the audio and video transfers are so that its not worth the extra for the bluray...unless you HAVE to own it. Wazza.

Lovely film great for family viewing
I loved this film. Its full of warmth and tells a story of achievement and success against all the odds. Like any good film it has its tragedy and tensions but overall its a real feel good film. it moves at a reasonable pace and is about a race horse that comes from nowhere and does better than expected. Also the relationship with the jockely and the horse. I am not a 'horsey' person but still loved the film, the kids and my mum did too. Great family viewing

Seabiscuit on HD-DVD is now the best movie I've ever seen
I saw the last half hour of Seabiscuit on television - enough to know I had to buy the DVD, which I loved. Recently I bought a new condition Toshiba HD-DVD player, as much for it's value in upscaling DVD's as for playing some of my brother's HD-DVD's. I then decided to import ten of my favourite films on HD-DVD from Amazon - most were at ridiculously low prices. "Seabiscuit" is simply magnificent in HD-DVD. There's absolutely everything to like about this film, and with each viewing I am more impressed. In fact I can't think of any reason to rate any of the thousands of films which I like and respect higher than Seabiscuit. Tobey Maguire's flawless acting is probably one of the main keys to its success - and as one of the executive producers he deserves to be exceedingly proud. HD-DVD's slogan "the look and sound of perfect" is proven true in this disc.

Seabiscuit--a classic study in teamwork
This will not certainly be a 1,000 word endorsement, but i can honestly say it is one of the best movies i have seen. I think it will go down as a classic. I have been told that the New England Patriot's all watched this film. It certainly proved what can happen when people beleive in something and work as a team to prove it. THIS WAS CERTAINLY THE CASE FOR SEABISCUIT AND THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS PLEASE GET THIS FILM---YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Una Joya
Una pelicula poco valorada. Es una historia emotiva, que puede aplicar en muchos campos, no solo en el mundo de las carreras. Bien dirigida, y con actores de primer nivel. No dejar de luchar es su principal arma.

Favorite film of 2003
Fans of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy were elated as the 3rd entree "Return of the King" won just about every Academy Award. Overlooked in all the LOTR madness was my pick for best film of 2003, SEABISCUIT. Its superiority as a film was demonstrated in every area--acting, inspirational story, and technical achievements. The progression from the prosperous 1920s to the Depression era was beautifully done from the production design to the costumes and just to the feel of the film. The story and screenplay were so inspirational and moving with Maguire, Bridges, and Cooper all at the top of their game. Special kudos for the camerawork, the great editing, and the sensitive direction of Gary Ross. Had I been handing out the Oscars that year, The BISCUIT would have gotten Editing, Screenplay, Cinematography, and Music...as well as best picture. The final quote always moves me to tears: "...everyone thinks we found this broken-down horse and fixed him; but he fixed us, and in a way, we fixed each other." and that's the story! I don't say this about many movies, but this was an absolutely Lovely film...and so much better than the interminable LOTR3 which won that year. A word about the Special Collector's set -- There is a souvenir booklet, some postcard of the real characters and the Biscuit, and a 2nd disc filled with documentaries and newsreels of the time. Definitely worth it for fans of the film.
