Q: Considering using eco 5 as step 1, and then processing the results through a reencle (fermentation-style) composter. has anyone tried this? thoughts?

I think that that would be good.

Q: Just curious why can't you use cardboard?

I honestly think putting cardboard in there could cause a fire with the heat. Maybe, just maybe tiny pieces, TINY PIECES maybe would cut up enough to not burn, but I would not and am not going to try it. I like this too much to attempt and maybe mess it up.

Q: what are consumable things? filter? carbon refill pellets?

Just the filter carbon which you can purchase pelleted filter carbon in aquarium dept.
