Are the two sides of the file the same? I would like a file that has a fine side and a coarse side.

Both sides are the same. Unlike sapphire (and other "sanded" file types) you don't need a fine or a coarse side on files like this one. Just vary the pressure you use when you file. Want to remove a lot of nail or working with a very hard nail? Press hard. Want to remove very little, or working with a softer/delicate nail? Press softly. You can't press harder with a "sanded" file because you will scrape off the texture, and you can't press softer because the "sanded" file won't work well if you do. This file is different. You can't scrape off the texture of this one - the texture *IS* the file.

How long does this nail file last?

I'm not a heavy user of the nail file. I can say that the rough file portion of this file is a triple cross cut pattern that is cut into the stainless steel. That cut exists on both sides. From a material and construction point, I'd think that this is near the top of quality.
