Let's start with the reasons why you shouldn't: It's too heavy for serious hiking It's filter works great for filtering out all of the stuff you shouldn't have in clean drinking water And it doesn't filter out any of the things tap water drinkers are concerned about. So who is this filter bottle for? At first glance it just seems like another gimmicky product, but let's dive deeper. There's a saying in photography that the best camera is the one you have with you. The same is true of water bottles. Emergencies can strike at any time, and our ability to go without water is limited to 3ish days. Even getting mildly dehydrated can slow reaction time and decision making. This bottle is great for people who want to guarantee that they can safely drink any water they can find. While it doesn't remove chemicals from water, if this is your daily driver for a water bottle, then if you should find yourself needing to drink from a sketchy fountain, pond, stream, river or puddle this is the bottle that will get you through it. Some examples I can think of: Your local water treatment plant has a sewage leak or bacterial contamination, or flood waters have contaminated your water supply. Heck a year ago a bunch of people got stuck on the I-95 for 27 hours, so you just never know. It's also a great bottle for people who travel to places with sketchy water. Overall it costs about as much as a regular stainless bottle but it lets you drink puddle water. It looks nice, and whole the carbon filter is not exceptionally large or exceptionally good at removing chemicals it will reduce chlorine and other chemicals somewhat. This is the only bottle I've ever had that didn't have an off taste and I've had stainless steel, plastic and glass. Even the glass bottle tasted like the silicone lid. The straw also prevents the consumption of microplastics. This is really great since all tap and bottled waters contain microplastics. I have had a friend test reverse osmosis water he filled into a glass bottle and it too had plastic contamination. While I wouldn't exactly buy this bottle due to the microplastics it's an added benefit. Concerns: the first thing I noticed when I opened up the straw is that the fibers are glued in place with an adhesive. A recent video on youtube by modern castle claims their water test revealed that the filter added dichloromethane to the water. I believe this may be from the adhesive holding the fibers in place. Modern Castle was testing a gravity fed version of the pitcher, in which case the adhesive side was submerged underwater. My guess is that it may be leaching in that scenario. Regardless, the measurement was 1.4ppb, which is well below the epa limit of 5ppb and below california's more stringent 4ppb. Lifestraw's customer service was light on the details regarding the ingredients or type of adhesive used, but competitor filter straws such as those made by Sawyer are constructed in a similar manner. The lifestraw go version has the glue at the top and it sits above the water line. While looking at it, it appears water may contact it but it is brief as it passes through to the carbon filter so I don't think this model of the lifestraw has much to worry about but I'd skip the fridge filter version of the lifestraw and just buy RO water. Finally I'm unsure of what the straw membrane are made of. It's definitely some sort of plastic, and I found news articles stating that lifestraw uses halogenated resins that have germicidal properties and I personally don't like the sound of any of that. **update** per lifestraw their current membranes do not contain germicidal properties. The material in the membrane is Polysulfone which is a rigid polymer that is stable and retains the pore size needed to filter particles out of the water. It also is resistant to degradation from high or low ph levels, and should not degrade or leach at the temperatures the fibers will be exposed to in the bottle. That being said, lifestraw didn't invent hollow fiber membrane filters, they're used in medical applications, food manufacturing, and municipal water treatment. The fibers are said to be food safe and non leaching and should only be dangerous if you light them on fire and inhale the fumes.

this is one of the best purchases for my health I've ever made. Prior to buying this bottle, I went through countless brita brand bottles that would constantly break when i'd drop it near the cap part. Not only does lifestraw do a way better at filtering out a long list of bacteria, microplastics and other bad stuff but beacause of how it's made, I've dropped it countless times and it hasn't broken on me. It has barely even dented. It's like the mack truck of water bottles lol. I highly recommend this bottle, I love what the company stands for and I love using this daily.

This water bottle is awesome. It is insulated do it keeps your water cold for hours. I haven't had a leakage problems and the filtration system works great. At first I had to get use to sucking the water up through the filters but after a couple days I had it mastered. Now the water pressure is just like sipping a cold drink through a straw. The bottle is not really that big but it holds a liter of water which is 2 water bottles. I love it and will never drink water any other way.

Like any metal water bottle it dents when you drop it, but it filters the water without having a chemically taste and I loved it for my outdoor job where there was only tap water. If you leave it closed for too long pressure builds up and might spill on you so open the full lid to let the air out. The full lid is kinda of hard to remove due to not being able to get a good grip

The price and reputation and multiple diagrams should tip you off, but if not: this isn't a normal water bottle, this is a water bottle with a big filter (more accurately, a boatload of tiny filters in parallel) to filter things that will kill you, and a smaller carbon filter to take out things that won't kill you but taste bad (like chlorine). It's not an open water bottle, you can't just chug water out of it like a fish. It does take effort to suck water out of it, especially when priming after a refill or when the bottle is nearly empty. It's really not so dreadfully difficult as some people make it out to be, but if you for example can't handle pulling a frozen milkshake up through a straw, you're gonna have a bad time with this too. Other thoughts: Nasties get caught in the filter and eventually die, but your mouth is a disgusting place too, so the mouthpiece still needs a quick rinse and shaken out daily. The 18oz is just too small to fit into old BMW cupholders. Phooey. Standard ice cubes definitely won't fit, but water bottle ice cubes/rods should. The filter is offset with this in mind, I think. It's as effective at keeping things cold as any vacuum-insulated flask is, so if you have access to a refrigerated water fountain, you're good regardless. The logo doesn't line up with the handle, ahh it's irritating. I'd recommend this bottle if you want to reduce your daily microplastic intake by... eh... 10%-20%, and have a suspicion that WW3 and/or a zombie apocalypse might happen in your lifetime necessitating drinking less-than-delicious water.

I pretested the filtration before leaving for a long journey through Asia and it worked great. Removed metal and chlorine smell, and water taste was very good. 3 stars. The issue was the lid/cap. The lid did not stand up to the vigorous task of staying put on the bottle while in the bottle holder of my backpack. The lid did not stay on through security checkpoints and general carrying, it was a sincere nuisance which made the actual sip area unsanitary. I tried to jerryrig working with what I had, placing the bottle inside next to my camera was not an option. The lid broke and the tip ripped, ended up tossing the bottle in the recycle bin. Will look for a better filter/liquid/travel option.

Two things that really stand out are how easy it is to open and clean. A lot of bottles can be a hassle in one or both of those areas, but this design is very user-friendly. The lid opens smoothly, and there aren’t a lot of hard-to-reach crevices—which is key for keeping things hygienic. What really sets this bottle apart, though, is the built-in LifeStraw filtration system. It’s a game-changer. Not only does it improve the taste of tap water, but it also gives you reliable peace of mind knowing that the water you're drinking is filtered and safe. I don’t typically like the taste of tap water, and this makes a noticeable difference. The filter is built right into the straw, so there’s no extra effort—just fill and drink. This bottle is so practical and reassuring that even one of my co-workers—who’s about to study abroad in Peru—picked one up to ensure access to clean drinking water during her travels. That alone speaks volumes about its reliability. 10/10 – Highly recommend. I loved the idea of a filter water bottle, as I don’t trust the water at my job, and I don’t love the extra weight of taking filtered water with me to work, as I take the subway and try to keep my bag light. I wish I would have studied the cleaning logistics before I purchased. Bacteria and mold will always grow where there’s water, including the filters of this bottle, and so periodic deep cleaning is necessary. Lifestraw states that the only way to kill these microorganisms is by cleaning parts in a solution of bleach diluted in water. To me, that makes this device pointless. I do not use any kind of corrosive or toxic chemicals for anything in my home, and the idea of using something like that in my drinking vessel makes me sick. The whole point to a water filter for me is to REMOVE contaminants like disinfectant byproducts. There is not enough rinsing in the world to make me forget bleach was in there. Anyway, if bleach residue isn’t bothersome for you, it’s an otherwise good bottle. It looks good and I had no problem sipping from it. I wasted my money on it because after a few days I’m too paranoid about germs building up in the filter to use it. I just ordered a non-filter water bottle with easy cleaning parts and will just be lugging filtered water to work going forward. I’ll just feel better using a bottle that I can just safely clean with a non-toxic dish washing liquid like Ecos or Puracy.

I originally bought this water bottle because I'm a bit sensitive to taste and where I live (Australia) I can taste the metal in the water even though we have a filtered tap. The straw helps tame the metal-ly taste of the water, and super stoked that it filters it still. The item arrived well-packed. Assembly was easy and I would personally recommend for you to soak the filter mechanism for about 15 minutes and wash the whole thing. One thing I can note is that because of the straw's length, there are still about 100ml of water in the bottle that doesn't get sucked in so you'll just have to fill when it reaches that level. It's insulated so keeps cold water cold. Also it is a bit bulky/heavy but I don't really mind it. Chuck it in your backpack and off your merry way. I am keen to test it overseas so I will update this review after my trip. The straw filter lasts about 5 years, so downright a pretty good investment.
