Can not get my vodafone sim card to work in it, do i need a particular network to make it work

any sim will work in it except 3 - if it says insert sim you need to insert the sim correctly - turn the phone off take out the sim wait a few seconds insert the sim correct way and click into the back turn phone on - each time you take sim out or swap sims the phone has to be turned off - if you take the sim out while phone on and put it back in it will not pick up network
