It is probably best to sow the seeds in a prepared area, although they could be seeded directly into grass if the grass is not too vigorous and is left uncut until early summer each year. Cover the seeds lightly, and wait for the winter will break the seed dormancy. The seeds will germinate in the spring.However if you cannot sow until the spring the seed will require stratification to break down the natural dormancy within the seed. This is not difficult to perform and just requires mixing the seed with a little damp compost or perlite/vermiculite followed by leaving them in the fridge for 4 - 6 weeks, checking every few weeks that the compost or perlite/vermiculite mix remains damp enough. Please note that if the mix is too wet the seeds could drown and not grow! After this the seeds can be sown either in the ground or in containers in a cold frame. If sown thinly, the seedlings can be left in their pots for the first year, regular liquid feeds will make sure that they get sufficient nutrients. After a year prick out the seedlings about 3 to a pot and grow on for 1 - 2 more years before planting out into their permanent positions when they are dormant. It will take at least 3 years for the plants to become strong enough to begin flowering. Bluebells are most suited to shady woodland areas . Bluebells prefer a shady site and are ideal for planting under deciduous trees. Plant in autumn/early winter . Bluebells will tolerate most soils but will perform better on deeper soils that are moisture retentive. Plant the bulbs in naturalistic drifts approx 10cm deep and at 10cm intervals. The bulbs (which look like small potatoes) came all wrapped in plastic bubble wrap so were sweaty and smelt like fermenting apples.... I planted Tulips and Daffs at the same time and most of them came up..
