Ostensibly this is a book about, as the subtitle says, "underground music and fashion in Britain 1960-1990", which seems a very limited scope, especially for someone like me who has not grown up in Britain and who knows nothing about, nor is particularly interested in this topic. Indeed the stated topic forms the basis for the text - fashion, to which the "bag" in the main title apparently refers.,more than music. However, the text constitutes just about 13% of the contents (excluding introductions and appendices). It consists of one page for each of the 36 chapters relating to specific periods or fashions. The bulk of the volume is taken by close to 1000 amazing photographs, which tell, a lot more than the text, a story of a whole subculture, of which fashion and music are just a superficial expression. Although the specific subculture is part of the British culture at the specified period, the rebellious emotional and socio-political messages expressed by photos of this young generation are universal. For me this has been a revelation. Also recommended for people born later than 1990 interested in history ...
As someone not British but always interested in youth scenes, underground, music and sub-/culture this book is quite a treasure for me. It is mainly a photo book but the pictures are not the ones you've seen so many times in other (good) books about punk, beat, goth, northern soul, glam, new romantic, mod, rockabilly etc. A lot of photos are from unknown or not that famous young people belonging to a certain scene at a certain time. To give it a structure, the book has 36 chapters about different youth scenes from the years 1960 untill 1990. Each one is introduced with a short text about the time, music, fashion and also politics. At the end you will find superb illustrations about the "style" of each scene which also show that this is not a book only about fashion (or if so, with a twinkle in the eye). Certain styles have been re-discovered, re-used or been mixed up over the years. A bit of non-plus is, that certain British youth scenes (immigrants, black people, Reggae/Dub, Hip Hop etc.) are hardly shown. But given the fact, that this book doesn't come along with the tagline "ultimate" or "underground-fashion-bible" and also, that the people who worked on it come from a certain background - this can be excused. At the end, a fascinating book and not one (given its format) lying around unused on your photo-book coffeetable. Also recommended for people born later than 1990 interested in history and past. The story does not end there.

Good overview of youth subcultures and fashion 1960-90
Good, medium-sized (18.5 x 24 cm) reference book for underground youth culture groups of the 60s to 90s. The photos (colour & b&w) are more interesting than the usual glossy ones we've all seen before in various publications and tv programmes as they look like they're mainly from people's personal photo albums. It's us, the people on the street! I especially liked the photos of the soul girls and boys as this group often overlooked (& I had forgotten that girl's hair shape we all tried to achieve in my early teens!) The early years included seem to have more photos proportionately - I can understand this as these are the rarer ones. There were a couple of groups I though merited less space than allotted, but perhaps the book is stronger for including these lesser-known groups - I'm sure I'd appreciate it if I'd been one of them! I'm including 2 photos below (there's 3rd one in the book too - just to tempt you!) of a very young Jay Strongman who anyone who went clubbing from the 80s on, will recognise! (Bless!) & sorry - Amazon has flipped them sideways. I did think King Kurt should have got a mention in the Psychobilly section - tho perhaps that's just my London-based observation (they just get a photo nod of someone wearing a KK t-shirt in double picture pg 224-5). I found the sketches at the back a bit basic/generalised but I guess that's what happens to street styles decades later (ie those not documented by designers etc at the time) - subtlety & range are lost - & I guess that generalisation is the illustrator's point; and for the fashion student or someone that wants to absorb the 'basics' about a sub- group, they do that job well enough. Nice format too - the 'rough cut' edges confirming the 'non-glossy' attitude of the book, everything has been well thought about. I will look for more by this author - he seems to have access to a wealth of photos of clubbers and sub-groups - thanks Sam for a real treat.

This is absolutely one of the best written, organized and illustrated books regarding style and uk music sub-culture from the 60's through the 90's. It so accurately describes the various nuances between each scene from Punk, Mod, Post punk to the more specific Postcard, Creation, Psychobilly, Suedehead, Baggy etc. etc.. With an inspiring illustrated guide in the back by Florence Bamberger (showing you the subtle details between looks) and the forward by Bobby Gillespie this book becomes and instant Must Have for any admirer of alternative fashion and music style. Pick this up with confidence, dig in with enthusiasm and enjoy like i do with FELT blaring in the background. I would also recommend Sam Knee's 2013 book, "A Scene In-between"

Libro fantastico che illustra l'evoluzione delle sottoculture giovanili britanniche dai rocker ai mod passando per il punk fino al glam rock. Fotografie originali dell'epoca che catturano l essenza del periodo, la musica, lo stile. Ottimo acquisto
