What the Diameter of the string used for this machine?

The string used is standard size and refill kits are available where sets are sold.

Is this easy enough for a 5-year-old (with help) who probably wouldn’t crank it very steadily but would insist on doing it himself?

My 8-year-old granddaughter needed some help in doing it, so a 5-year-old would definitely need assistance. The bracelets are pretty but it's harder to make than it looks.

do i have the option to fill the spools w my own thread. can i create my own refills w thread of my choosing but use the empty spools from package??
