Exceeds my expectations
Fantastic device. Everything working beautifully. Great picture and sound quality, PVR and timeshift recording (even two timeshift types) on a USB Stick or external HDD flawless, remote controller responsive, dual tuners to record two different channels or watch and record simultaneously, nice other features like favourite channels lists and so on. The only small issue is that the EPG doesn't show programmes on several channels at the same time. Doesn't bother me, the EPG still is usable enough. Coincidentally, I've bought several August devices during several years. Originally mainly because they are so affordable. No problems ever, always happy with them. It is difficult to understand why this August DVB482 gets quite many negative reviews. Maybe people just don't understand how to operate this kind of boxes? (Operating is very simple, especially if you are familiar with TV tuner and recorder devices.) Maybe people expect too much? This device does not wash your laundry, make your dinner or write your emails. It just beautifully shows and records TV programmes (and plays multimedia files from your USB device). Thank you, August.

For sub £50 it's great little DVR but don't expect the world.
Firstly let me start by saying I'm big on relativity and what I mean by that is if you buy this sub £50 DVR and expect Apple or TiVO standard viewing experiences you will be sorely disappointed but if you bear in mind this is a sub £50 device you'll be delighted. We've been a Virgin customer for years but the price was going up to literally £180 a month which is way over priced so we cancelled Virgin but I still like to be able to record stuff, hence getting this box. I knew this device was small but wow when it arrived it was actually smaller than I even thought - which is great. It takes up little space. It also includes an HDMI cable which was a nice touch as I've bought £200+ DVD players before that don't come with a cable. It comes with everything you need to get started, including batteries. As I say, if you remember it's sub £50 then it's a delightful device but it has some flaws: - While recording you can't view the EPG or change channels - you're stuck. - Recordings, instead of getting named by their title, get named by the TV channel so instead of The Young Ones it will be BBC which is annoying. - The UI looks like it's from the early 90s. - While it recording it flashes a recording symbol on the top right throughout which really annoys me. It also has some good points: - Easy to use. - Plug in USB drive and record - recordings are unencrypted and h.264 and I believe it supports h.265 too. I've plugged in a 2TB external hard drive and it's working perfectly. - The remote can learn your TV on/off and volume +/1 so you can just use the one remote for general usage. If I'd paid £200 or even £150 I'd probably be greatly dissapointed but for £50 - it does the job and saving me £180 a month on Virgin so I can't complain. I would definitely recommend this little device for this price point.

Very good, but minor usability issues
This product is replacing a £400 hard disk / dvd recorder. Big box vendors like Curry's will tell you that you can't get freeview recorders any more and this product proves them wrong, at a very low price. Apart from time shifting, I bought this so that stack up some reasonable programmes and films to watch on holiday, where there are only a few generally low-quality channels. The main down side is the clunky user interface. Whilst it is true that you can view another channel whilst recording, you can't use the EPG to schedule more recordings at the same time. Generally speaking, it's well worth learning to live with the limitations for the benefits it brings.

No frills but basic value
Good points: Very inexpensive. Easy set-up and works straight out of the box External storage via USB is great - you can expand and add as much storage as you like, and your library is portable between devices. Over the last 10 years we have had 3 BT YouView boxes die, and lost all library recordings each time. Setting a program to record is easy, and playback quality is good. How to delete a recording is not immediately obvious - you mark it for deletion in the library (or 'list'), then update settings. Catch-up streaming via iPlayer, ITVX, etc. works well Bad points: The device is pretty basic - which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on opinion and expectations. No other streaming service apps (e.g. Amazon, Netflix) are available - but Firestick is cheap and fixes this Electronic Program Guide is a bit clunky and not nice to look at. Scrolling up and down the EPG or using the Next Page / Previous Page button on the handset result in the unit changing channel to whichever channel is highlighted - you cannot browse without selecting the new channel, so you can't look to see what else is on now or later on other channels and still keep the current program running in the background. Series recording is not available: You can view the EPG and set a program to be recorded, and you can set the frequency of recording (every day, every week, etc.) BUT the setting is for the channel and the start time & end time - NOT the program. If schedules are revised you will miss the program you were hoping to record... I haven't seen a timer as basic as this since mid-1980's VCR's before VideoPlus was a thing! Volume level is really low - For comfortable listening when watching live broadcast through the TV, TV volume setting is around 20 (max volume on the TV is 50) - but when watching the same program via the August box and with the volume setting up full on the August box, the TV volume has to be on 30-40 to get similar sound. So if selecting a different input source (Firestick, DVD player, or live broadcast via the TV) you are suddenly deafened if you forget to reduce the TV volume before switching from the August box. Pairing with TV remote only partly successful - will turn TV off & on, but generally easier to just use two remote handsets Summary: Until it died last week, we watched all TV through the BT YouView box, almost never watching live through the TV tuner, and using the YouView remote for everything. With the August box it's the complete opposite - I'm only turning the unit on to watch a recording or when there is a program I want to record, but once the timer is set I turn back to watching directly from the TV - and only using the August remote to control the August box, not any of the TV functions. But catch-up streaming works well.

Okay for recording manually, but on timer recording, PVR switches on, but doesn’t record. All settings are correct, time and region, but no amount of fiddling will cure the problem. If flash drive was faulty, PVR would not record anything onto it in manual mode.
