NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER: Due to recent illegal counterfeiting of this book, we cannot guarantee book quality when purchased through a third-party seller. Now in a fully rewritten fourth edition, this is the authoritative presentation of motivational interviewing (MI), the powerful approach to facilitating change. It has been updated and streamlined to be even more user-friendly as a practitioner guide and course text. MI originators William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick elucidate the four tasks of MI--engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning--and vividly demonstrate what they look like in action. A wealth of vignettes and interview examples illustrate the dos and don'ts of successful implementation in diverse contexts. The book reviews the evidence base for the approach and covers ways to assess the quality of MI. The companion website provides reflection questions, annotated case material, and additional helpful resources. New to This Edition Most of the book is entirely new. Addresses the breadth of MI applications not only in counseling and psychotherapy, but also in health care, education, coaching, management, and other contexts. Discusses delivering MI remotely, simple versus complex affirmations, strategic use of directional questions, ethical considerations, and other new or expanded topics. Increased emphasis on using MI throughout a client's process of change and growth, not just in the preparatory stage. Pedagogical Features New or updated online materials, including reflection questions and annotated cases. Key points at the end of each chapter. Personal Perspective and For Therapists boxes in every chapter. Extensive glossary. New self-assessment tool that targets the component skills of MI. Rosengren, and Motivational Interviewing and CBT: Combining Strategies for Maximum Effectiveness, by Sylvie Naar and Steven A. Safren. Classic reference for patients with less-than-perfect motivation for counselling and treatment
Excellent book for any clinician, especially as a review for basics of Motivational Interviewing (MI) which in my practice has been the gold standard for working with patients with eating disorders and any other tough-to-treat conditions. Don’t let the date fool you- this is a classic written by the original MI experts, just excuse the British-isms! Begins with an explanation of why most clinicians are not successful with just CBT, DBT, whatever modality they use- namely that it is the minority of patients/clients who come to us fully ready to make a huge change, while most are still “on the fence” in one way or another, and need the compassionate clinician to help them shift from a “pre-contemplative” or “contemplative” stage without nagging or assuming they are 100% motivated. I’ve used this as a mandatory text book for grad students in counselling profession training and I continue to reference it. Contains clear writing, well organized chapters, and useful sample dialogues. Well worth the price on the sleeve!

Easy to read, very accessible even if you're new to the topic.

Incredible - fluid, challenging, and evidence-based
Incredible! As someone who wants above all to be helpful to those around me, MI really challenged my approaches and provides a template for change-moderation that conpletely aligns with intuition on how I would like to receive help - not with pity or know-it-all-ism, but with openness and curiosity for my inner conflict.
