can I work these over acrylic paint?

Yes but keep in mind these sticks are pure oil paint in a stick form and as you probably know, oil and water do not mix. So your Acrylic paint and any Acrylic Mediums you are using needs to be fully dried before you go in with the sticks. Once your Acrylic (water based) products have fully dried, feel free to use these sticks, any oil-based paint and any oil paint medium interchangeably. These sticks are great, Have fun!

What is the difference between the student version and the professional version. Looks the same to me with slight variations in the colors

Shiva only makes this one 12 piece set in student sticks. All other sticks/color options are their professional sticks. Other than colors, the only difference is the student paintstiks contain a lower pigment content than the professional sticks. I wouldn't let that scare you off, though, because visually these colors are very bright, completely opaque and they are smooth with excellent coverage and easy to work with. If you have never used a paint stick before, I would highly recommend this set unless you were looking for different colors. This is a great starter set for sure!

what size are these oil sticks

According to the box, the sticks are 4.5 x 5/8" (11.5 x 1.7cm). They are large, bigger than Jumbo sized crayons.

Can these be used for outdoor signs?

I would guess yes. However they don’t dry as quickly as acrylic paint. These are oil based paints. So would you use that for your outdoor signs?
