There are 4 separate shelves. The lowest being the biggest for storage of head phones etc or another hi fi item. Next shelf I have Pioneer cassette deck, Denon CD player, NAD Receiver and on the flat top record player. Gaps are 15-17 cm wide on each level with plenty of room spare for the separates, they are not squeezed on by any means. Hope this helps. **Q: what is the length from inside post to inside post, would it house a marantz av receiver 440x185x411 wxhxd ?** A: The inside post to post measurement is 460 but you're problem is more the deph which is only 400 at the centre and tapers to 370 at the edge (still inside posts) and the shelf heights240, 170, 160,150 moving up grm bottom. One solution is to put amp right at top i.e. not enclosed betwee shelves.hope this hwelps.phil **Q: I don't need 5 shelves, can this be assembled using fewer shelves** A: I don't see why not. The middle shelves are identical **Q: will this be suitable for av receiver that states "minimum of 30cm air space above and 20cm around the sides of unit" along with a record player etc.** A: This ably packs my separates, turntable sits on the top with receiver, tape deck and cd player all underneath on separate shelves. Each shelf is about 16cm high and there is about 4cm spare which is loads of room between the top of the shelf and the separate. The room on the shelf is massive also so don't worry about whether it will fit. This is a great unit for separates and very glad I bought it as it was a bargain compared to other more expensive less spacious racks. Specifically about your question, 30cm air space above a receiver is the length of my ruler and I don't think this is right. So long as the receiver has an air space above it, I think 30 cm is excessive. I bought this one because it was cheap, functional and looked good. It was easy to assemble and took about 20 minutes to put together, no tools required. You have no option to vary the height like more expensive models but I needed all the levels anyway (you can change the order as mentioned in one of the other reviews). It is really important the tubes separating levels are embedded in the ends properly. The cable management is poor and with 1 hdmi, 7 power cables, 4 speaker cables, 3 scart and numurous AV links I have ended up with a bit of a mess. However I had already picked this up from earlier reviews and accepted this as the trade for the price.Delivery was delayed by winter weather, but I e-mailed the supplier through Amazon and it was sent 24 hours later.
