When my first one finally started to wear down and I felt i had had it way longer than I should safely still be using it, I replaced it. They go on very easily and hold pretty well but I am not a knowledgeable person when it comes to makeup and like it most for its functionality. The twisting action which exposes more of the stick as its worn down is wonderful - easily preserves the product itself from breaking and means I don't have to sharpen a normal pencil for precise application.
