I have a bunch of old family videos we recorded over the years. I have vhs tapes, mini-dvi and 8mm. Trying to get all of these copied and saved to my local storage system was something I wanted to do for awhile and after contacting several different outfits that provide this as a service I decided I would save on the high cost of paying someone else and do it myself. I was a bit concerned about how well this would work because I noticed a few negative reviews that talked about it working for a little while and then no longer working again. Thankfully I did not have any issues at all. Connecting this device up is extremely easy. You connect the USB adapter to your PC (either USB-C or use the included adapter to convert it to USB-B) It has 5 inputs, 1 HDMI in, AV in and S Video in. One of my camera's was just AV in and my other was both s video and avi. In both cases the video and sound transferred with no issues. To handle the conversion you will need to download an awesome piece of software called OBS Studio. This is free/open source software and it works very well. I had to adjust the settings to get the audio correct. You can contact OBS Studio support or ClearClick support in the event you run into questions or an issue. Both are very helpful and respond rather quickly. I was able to convert 8- 8mm tapes and 12- mini dvi tapes over to digital. One thing I wish I had done back in the day was purchase cleaning tapes because after sitting for so long my camera's all needed some good cleaning. My next challenge will be converting all of our VHS tapes to digital. This adapter will handle that as well! Great product for the home user that needs to convert their old home videos!

This device works great for what I was looking for. I'm able to connect my Blu-ray player to the AV video and record stuff onto the computer for personal use. The only issue I encounter was the HDMI input where it has a hdcp copyright protection. I tried three different HDMI splitters in order to record using the HDMI, but with no success. Either I didn't get the right brands, or it doesn't work for the Blu-ray player at all. If anybody is able to, I'd like to know if there is an adapter for this particular device for the HDMI. But for now, I am not disappointed with this device for what I am using it for

SO easy to use with the clear instructions provided by the company. I love how tiny it is and worked right out of the box. The instructions that they provide on how to use OBS are very easy to follow. I'm using it to archive home videos from Hi-8 tapes and VHS tapes. It's saving me a TON of money and giving me a great quality video, considering the source material. I've used Elgato before - and while that was easy, I didn't like how I had to use their software and that the video quality was compressed and poor. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product!

This works with my MAC book (m series) - pay attention to the set up video they have. I've plugged both a mini dv player camera in and a VHS player - no issues .... works as advertised

Works well for VHS transfers with OBS software but I recommend that you watch several videos on how optimize OBS for VHS capture. The learning curve is not steep, just copy the handful of settings for OBS for VHS transfer. The quality is excellent, of course, with the caveat that SD is nothing like modern formats, but after upscaling to HD using the composite video output, I could not find an S video output cable in my collection of cables, I was surprised how well 40 year old VHS video held up. As a side note, I wasn’t surprised that a couple of tapes had fused, tape stuck together in the cassette, and would not play.

I used to have a desktop with a great PCI capture card. I recently replaced my desktop with a laptop, which forced me to buy a USB-based capture device. Connecting the device is super simple, but setting up the software is a bit more tricky. The device has RCA and HDMI inputs, and the HDMI overrides the RCA plugs so if you're wanting to capture video from both sources (like I do), you'll have to unplug whichever ones you're not using. Not a huge deal, but it prevents you from hiding it somewhere behind your desk. The device doesn't come with any software and recommends you download, install, and configure the free program OBS, which essentially does screen capturing. This works relatively well with the HDMI input, as most digital sources are letterbox. Things get a bit more difficult when capturing from a VCR, which is 4:3 ratio. To crop out the black bars, you've got the change both the capture window and the rendering size in OBS, and you'll have to change those settings every time you swap back and forth. I use OBS for streaming and creating YouTube videos, so changing my settings back and forth constantly is a real pain. The good news is, the device is compatible with most any video capture program. The bad news is, you'll likely have to pay for it. I can't mention the name in this review, but I found some capture software that worked great for both 16:9 and 4:3 capturing, which cost me an additional $30 on top of the price of the device. The first video I captured from RCA was very light and washed out. When I tried it a second time, it looked great. It's like half the time the brightness knob is turned up to 100% or something. I tried swapping USB ports, RCA cables, and multiple VHS tapes, and none of those fixed the issue. I don't know what the box is detecting, but half the time it starts out too bright. You can fix this by disconnecting and reconnecting the RCA cables a few times, but... should I have to? Also, this has nothing to do with VHS DRM -- it does it even while staring at the blue VCR screen before you press play on a tape. Sometimes the blue is bright and washed out, and sometimes it's darker and looks correct. On the first couple of videos I captured, I noticed what sounded like a helicopter in the audio track. Again I tried multiple tapes and pairs of RCA cables, and nothing solved the issue. After hours of troubleshooting and searching the internet I discovered that the sound was coming from "interference." After more troubleshooting, I discovered the sound was coming from my laser printer, which is not plugged into the same outlet as my laptop, but is on the same breaker. By turning the printer off, I was able to eliminate the sound interference. My options are to turn my printer off every time I want to capture an old tape, or to move the printer out of my office and into another room. With the additional software I purchased, after plugging/unplugging/plugging in the RCA cables multiple times, and turning off my printer... I was finally able to get a good quality capture. I've been working in IT for 30 years, and I suspect the average consumer would have returned this to Amazon instead of jumping through all these hoops. I know ClearClick has some newer devices, and it's possible some of these issues have been worked out in newer models. As for this one, it works good enough for now, but I'll be keeping an eye out for a better option.

Video download quality compared to original was distorted. Also sound echoes. Not sure if it’s to do with settings… though very easy setup

I bought this specifically to digitize a bunch of old VHS tapes. I had also just built a fast Intel Win11 PC and thought I'd try out this device on what was my newest, fastest computer. But no matter what I did, (reinstalls, etc.) the OBS software didn't want to play nice. So I went over to my 2012 Mac running Monterey on Open Core and it worked like a charm. I transferred at least 80 tapes and the quality was quite good given that the original tapes weren't all that great much of the time. Lots of settings to choose from, so it's quite flexible. Mission accomplished. I'm a happy customer. Thanks. :)
