A young boy from Guernsey and his incarceration in Germany during WW2
I knew that the Channel Islands were invaded by the German Army during WW2 but I didn't know that some of the islanders were sent to concentration camps in Germany. This is an interesting account from a very young boy and his brave parents on how they managed to survive in the most terrible conditions. They managed to make the most of their dreadful time in the camp, even keeping a sense of humour.

The Day the Nazis Came
Stepnen was born 7th June, 1938, to his parents Cecil and Eileen Matthews, they lived in St Martin on the Channel Island of Guernsey and were fiercely British, Guernsey had 10 parish's each with an elected Douzaine of 12 men and 2 constables, my elder brother Alan was in hospital with pneumonia, June 1939 war began, Britain declared war on Germany, all military withdrew from the Islands as they coud not be defended, my father was a constable with a building business, many Islanders left to join the army, many women left for factory work on the mainland, all children of school age were evacuated with their teachers, my brother Alan also left28th June 1940 the air raids began, German aircraft landed with troops, nobody could listen to the BBC, 17 Jews were deported, curfew was 11pm to 6am, only bikes were allowed for transport, only German was taught in Schools, Europeon prisoners arrived for hard labour, all British born citizens were required to register, it was a hard time for everybody, Sept 1942 all British nationals were to be imported to camps in Germany, my family were among them, 63 of us went first, we were shipped by boat and train, we arrived at Dorston Camp once home to Russians , it was filthy,The book continues with Stephens life in the camp, they then moved to Biberach till the end of the war, the barracks were overcrowded, there was never enough food, they had no heating, Hitler Youth were camped next door, Stephens fingers were broken for trying to give a Russian prisoner food, 130 Jews arrive from Bergen-Belsen, we knew the Americans were close but did not know how far, there is a tank battle and we are in the middle, his father has to go on his bike with mum and Stephen to let the Americans know they are thereMy verdict, not bad, had a suspicion the author was struggling to fill the book

Amazing and factual true story of hardships faced in the war
I loved this book, Stephen writes so well of the hardships he and his parents had to endure with so many other people. I could not put this book down. There are a few laugh out loud moments in this book as Stephen was a little character. I think the humour he shared with his Mum and Dad certainly helped get them through so many difficult times. If you are a avid fan of true life stories you have to read this. I would give it 10 out of 10.

Illuminating read
After reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society I wanted to find out more about what happened during WW2 on the Company Islands as I felt there was a distinct lack in my knowledge of the subject. Found it a most interesting and informative read , well written.

Great Read
Another example of the kind of book which prevents me reading fiction. Real life is so much more interesting. This is an important historical account of a little known part of ww2 history but it is also a very interesting account of imprisonment in a detention camp as seen by a young boy.
