is it suitable for a four year old?

Yes, it should be. I got it for my 2 1/2 year old last Christmas. She is still riding it at 3 years. I don't imagine it will last too many more years though. Your 4 year old, if they are small or average size, should last a year or two. After that, they will probably be too big. Hope that helps!
